He was concerned about winning the traditional way only when the traditional rules applied. Running for a third term at all demonstrates a total abandonment of tradition. Anything goes once you’ve sufficiently pissed on the constitution.
Trump doesn’t need to be popular or persuade anyone to vote for him anymore. All he has to do is refuse to leave, just as he attempted to do in 2020. He can declare some sort of bogus “emergency” and sign an executive order canceling the election, citing national security concerns. Congress is already terrified of him and doesn’t want to deal with a second coming of January 6, so they will comply. Any legal challenges will take weeks or months to work their way up to SCOTUS, where he has at least 2 justices who will rule in his favor.
Or he can still run without having to concern himself with popularity because he will have almost certainly have corrupted the system sufficiently by then to “win,” and you still end up with the same situation as above where by the time any legal challenges work their way up the chain, he’ll be sworn in.
The failure of our collective imagination is partly what got us to this point. Let’s not make that mistake again.
