Tucker isnt a complete idiot, even if he often plays at being a credulous knob on his various platforms. He has to know an America First party will split the vote and throw the election to the Democrat (really any Democrat) akin to the Perot-Bush-Clinton election. Others said it below, but this feels like a ploy until Vance secures the 28 nomination (or Presidency if the Big Mac Attack of Destiny strikes Trump).
Massie, Greene, and Kent are all true believers and there is a "squint and you see it" horseshoe audience that an America First Party could grab (especially on economics) but these leaders, and their vision, is compromised by strains of White Nationalism. To really pull off a 3rd party attempt they need a strong showing with minority voters.
Is this just his attempt to still seem relevant? He won't ever win a GOP nomination. He will never go near Democrats. And a third party is a joke. The biggest 3rd party we have run in our lifetimes is Ross Perot. Prior to that it has been a long time since the Bull Moose party. I just don't see how Tucker has the chutpah to pull off a 3rd party.
I hate to say it but the only person I could see making a third party is Trump. If Trump after Term1.0 had said "the GOP didn't give me everything I wanted. I am running under the Trump/MAGA party" then I would see a third party. And the GOP would have been more of what Tucker wanted. Centralists Dems would move to GOP cuz Dems would be a bit more left.
But it didn't happen. Trump decided to mold the GOP around HIS image to create a new party for all intents and purposes. The GOP after capitulating to Trump can never go back to what it was when it ran Romney, McCain, Bush, etc. So the third party is dead. Or it at least evolved, ate the GOP, then morphed beyond it and spit out the remnants. In the end Tucker like the rest will all vote for GOP or stay at home. They all fall under the category of "racists who are butthurt about the GOP but still hate non-whites, non-christians, and non-conservatives and see them as worse than evil so they attempt to justify WHY they won't vote or won't cast a ballot for a Dem"

Left-wing economic populism has broad appeal, like about 2/3s of voters. Even Tucker sees it. Right-wing social populism, not so much, probably only 1/3 of voters, but about the same as left-wing social populism. The party that sets aside the culture war agenda and focuses on a left economic populism (AKA the Warren / Sanders economic agenda) will win large governing majorities in Congress and the presidency by a landslide. It is what FDR did when the country was in a similar situation.
This is going nowhere. Carlson has never had more than niche appeal within Conservatism Inc. & has even less outside that bubble. As a branding shift/exercise to keep the grift gravy train rolling, it makes sense, but that’s all it is.
