Susan Collins is complicit in this recent murder in Biddeford Maine.

It's not that I don't think these reforms and changes can happen.

It's that I don't think the Democrats can deliver them in a meaningful way.

Thank you, Adrian for your reporting. Keeping these crimes, committed by agents of the federal government, front and center is crucial for any possibility of change. What the government is doing is unspeakable but we must keep speaking about it. I really really really want to believe in karma right now — the old “what goes around comes around.” Very bad things should be visited on those who commit these murders.

Approval of ICE among Republican voters is 75-80% depending on the survey. Even now they'll say this is what the voted for. They're minds are warped. The see everything as a violent physical confrontation and their sides total dominance the only acceptable outcome. That's way we're stuck on Iran. We have a serious long term problem on our hands that goes way beyond Immigration Policy. Your family member, the people in your town. They're rapidly budding fascists and I don't see that fever breaking anytime soon.

"the anodyne press release [from the DHS] mentioned that “ICE law enforcement attempted to conduct a vehicle stop. The vehicle attempted to flee the scene and, fearing for public safety, an officer discharged his weapon.” Not officer safety. Public safety."

They went from ICE officer feared for his life to "public safety." What's next for the descending rationalizations of the murders is: "fuck you, what ya gonna do about it?"

Adrian, thank you for bearing witness. For allowing us to also bear witness. This is a brutal piece but we can’t allow these murders to become background noise.

May the next real Attorney General bring all of these people to justice. Thank you for this superb, gutting reporting, Adrian. We are so fortunate to have you.

Beautifully written Adrian, and horrifying and tragic and unacceptable beyond words

Every fucking person, and I mean ALL OF THEM, who have participated in this egregious, cruel, barbaric behavior should be charged and prosecuted by the next Democratic administration. These thugs belong in jail, and ICE should absolutely be abolished.

For once, I have no words.

While these killings of Latin men are happening in our country, the Administration is executing Latin men on the high seas without any adjudication that they have engaged in criminality. It’s not a coincidence.

This shit absolutely enrages me. 77 million people enabled this violence and they own it.

Thank you Adrian for your humanity. Lorenzo and Johan lived!

What makes me sick are the comments on posts by community organizations in Maine. Things like “well, if you’re in the country illegally….” which, by the way, this man wasn’t. And even if he were, that’s a reason to execute someone??!! And the kicker for me?? Where is the outrage? Where are the news cameras and the wall to wall coverage for all the brown people?? Where are the politicians lining up and showing up and speaking out. It’s disheartening. We have lost our humanity.

I see these kind of comments on news posts on FB. And laugh emojis. WTF is wrong with people? We live among monsters.

It scares me to be honest. Soulless people make cruel choices

Once again, thank you for your excellent reporting. I am in tears.

“Whether someone is in the country illegally or not does not give ICE license to murder. And when the end result is a tragic killing, the fallout goes far beyond a solitary individual.”

I think we’re past the point of logic when it comes to this lawless agency in which cruelty is the point.

Interesting enough, they didn’t play the “guy tried to run me over card,” but instead said they shot him for public safety concerns.

What does that even mean? These people are immigration police, not trained to “protect and serve” the community—and it shows!

And secondly, if public safety is the concern, then trying to run the guy off the road in unmarked and unidentifiable cars would be the exact opposite of public safety—it’s actually counterproductive; they are a public nuisance at best and lawless criminals at worst!

Lastly, this agency has strayed far from its mandate. ICE is sending members of their Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) to people’s homes who have sent Ice letters telling them of brutal tactics—not threatening anyone, only to be met by these officers, who show up unannounced, threatening them with jail sentences or worse. Who does this?

If anyone is wondering why no officers have been indicted, it’s because OPR is the division in ICE who’s mandate is to investigate criminal behavior by other ICE agents—instead they’re being resourced to threaten and intimidate American citizens, no different than what the DOJ is doing with reporters. Both equally illegal and a danger to our republic. Let that sink in! IMHO…:)

Very well said, Rob. It leaves me so sick, down to the depths of my soul, to read these stories and see the obligatory thirty second pieces on the television, and to think to myself, this is the country I live in.

Adrian points out very well that we have progressed beyond the, ‘he tried to run over an officer’ stage of this story to, ‘we shot a man dead to protect the public’ phase we are now in. I know this is repetitive but; our government has now taken the position that summary execution is justified by, ‘protecting the public’. Their direct proposition is state sanctioned murder of unarmed human beings to, ‘protect the public’ is adequate justification for murder.

The message - loud and clear - is we can kill people because we decided it was in the public’s interest to kill them. STATE - SANCTIONED -MURDER.

So, how far away from paramilitary execution squads are we today? How many days, weeks or months before people in battle gear just show up at a given location and execute a man or woman - not necessarily the, “right” man or woman, or men, or women or men & women, where the justification given is simply, ‘to protect the public’ ?

I am sorry to say I think we are not far away from that day.

Robert Jaffee's avatar

Well said, and to answer your question about “state sanctioned executions,” it’s sad to say, but I believe we’re already here.

The officers who killed all four of these people so far; Goode, Pretti, Guerrero, and Salgado Araujo will never face justice; the FBI has taken control of the investigations, and under Patel, they will exonerate them, just like with all the Epstein predators.

Then there is the internment camps where over 26 people have died from lack of medical attention and access to drugs needed for their health.

Remember the adage about the rich man losing all his wealth—when asked how he went broke, he says, “gradually, then all at once!”

That’s how fascism takes hold—gradually, and then suddenly the world completely changes and you no longer recognize your country. And sadly, at least 30-35% of Americans want this….:)
