The idea that Watergate was a conspiracy from people out to get him is barking mad. The break-in- which he almost certainly knew nothing of, until after the fact- was an idiotic crime by some very dumb people. It’s actually a disservice to him to have these grotty little humans trying to put this spin on it. The irony of course is that Nixon was an ideologically moderate Republican despite his authoritarianism and MAGA-worthy paranoia. If the reasonably but not quite perfectly loyal to Trump John Cornyn couldn't get renominated, he certainly wouldn't do.

Even if that institutional takeover was by lawful means, they think it puts them at such an unfair disadvantage that they are morally entitled to break rules and even laws to "fight back."
