According to a 2020 US Senate Minority Report on Birth Tourism in the United States (https://www.hsgac.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/imo/media/doc/2022.12.20-%20Final_Birth%20Tourism%20Report.pdf), there were two companies - one specializing in helping Chinese citizens and the other Russian citizens seeking to obtain birthright citizenship for their newborns. Until changes had been made to US nonimmigrant B visa requirements in 2020. Their clients were paying customers who first had to obtain a US nonimmigrant B visa as a "visitor for pleasure"(?).
The Minority Report and its Recommendations do not address those who seek asylum in the U.S. who may be pregnant.
Sarah, as always I’m appreciative of the work you do in the focus group space- and maybe I’ll understand the why behind your mission to figure these MAGAs out after I read your book- here’s the but: this reads like sanewashing to me: “In these voters’ telling, they are not hostile to immigrants coming to America. It simply becomes a process question: one about fairness and rules, as opposed to a question about being pro- or anti-immigrant”
They are blatantly anti-immigrant, and the whole endeavor to understand these MAGAs is well past exhausting. This is bigotry and hate phrased in a way they think keeps them sounding like decent people. They aren’t. Anyone who is still in the Trump camp today is rotten and doesn’t deserve a respectable space to share their hateful opinions.
Well, that's depressing. Thanks for ruining my Sunday night. But I knew that. tRump isn't the problem: it's the people. Those people. Ooops, now I sound like one of Them.
Growing up in a big white, republican SoCal community, our Sr Class Prez was a terrific smart guy -- Gyula Szabo. He was a leader in our big high school of mostly whites. He went to Stanford. He changed his name to Brian. "Because I don't want to be 'Guy-U-la'." His name--pronounced by all of us in high school as he introduced himself was "Ju-la". A good name for a great guy. I don't recall that we ever thought--or cared--he was an immigrant. He was part of us. Thankfully.
All the more reason to require civics in schools and to reform the immigration system. Start with the Lankford-Murphy bill which trump torpedoed in order to run a demagogue's campaign against immigration in the 2024 election.
I’ll represent JVL here in offering the mass of the public (can’t quite get myself to say the “C” word but it’s right on the tip of my tongue) has always been in large part hostile to immigration issues as well as overstating the “burden” of the cost of foreign aid to the US. These blind spots shame me honestly but they are not new.
I think the purpose of a focus group is misunderstood. It targets certain segments and demographics with the understanding thats its not representative of anything more than what those individuals think. To get an idea about what that particular group thinks. When you do this many times and many different places with many different groups, it can start to lend to a general idea. The understanding that it is not a representation of entire groups is understood going in. One focus group is a glimpse, but 250 of them can give you a more detailed view.
Right Sarah. A Candian knows that Common Law indicates residence upon birth: No issue there for 1000 years. Liberals - Canadian brand since 1867 - say: Common Law settles it.
My fellow registered republicans here in Florida who are Trump supporters are very defensive about their party line. They will lament his lying and self dealing within his family while insisting that people that aren’t white are cheating in some way or another. The reasons change depending upon what the latest grievance is. They are good people who I care about, but the cult-like devotion is like questioning their religious beliefs. It just makes their devotion stronger.
Trump, as usual, identified a valid issue with an incorrect solution. Still, I think we should end birthright citizenship to illegal immigrants with a constitutional amendment.
I find this skepticism against Immigrants disgusting. This Country was founded and built by Immigrants. People don’t seem to understand the length of time it takes to become a Citizen. And, even worse is the fact that many are being arrested while following the requirements.
Sarah, knowing that anti-immigration or follow the law rhetoric- how can democrats and independents counter that message. The immigration system is a bureaucratic mess with unreasonable limits. Immigration lawyers who were in short supply have been gutted. How can we reframe the diversity message so it demonstrates the economic value but also the richness of living in a society that has variety of thoughts and opportunities for everyone to grow better.
Democrats continue to fail in their messaging around significant issues. They need to educate the public on the nightmare “process” to become a citizen and who the current administration is going after. I know a young nurse who came here at 18 months old with her family who was just taken into ICE custody. She was never on government benefits but she helps meet Stephen Miller’s arrest quota. Dreamers are being targeted.

According to PolitiFact, between 5,000 and 26,000 babies are born in the U.S. who may result "birth tourism", that is:: "...women come to the U.S. to give birth specifically so their children obtain citizenship..." instead of those fleeing oppression or death threats who seek asylum here (https://www.politifact.com/article/2026/jul/01/birth-tourism-birthright-citizenship-Supreme-Court/).
According to the USDA, approximately 3.6 million babies are born in the U.S. per annum.
Perhaps "birth tourism" may not be an overwhelming issue. Except for Stephen Miller and such.

That is just pure ignorance and hate. Which is the bread and water of trump.
It is a little frightful.
They just sound like a bunch of Deplorables. People that nice people try to avoid.

It’s a testament to the most effective propaganda machine ever built. We have so much work to do.
