Thank you for continuing to cover this. But what can people outside of Florida do? It feels hopeless.

A. Theresa Fizino's avatar

It’s being run by the state of Florida. I’m not in Florida. My rep and both senators are already voting against the DHS funding.

I’m not saying that contacting Congress isn’t important, but this as the response for everything is just not working anymore.

I get that. Maybe it's time for a more creative approach, like organizing a "Display the Beatitudes" campaign to complement the Ten Commandments displays and general revival of scripture in American political discourse.

I have no patience for the Hispanics (or any voter) who voted for Trump and are now saying 'we didn't sign up for this." YES YOU DID! He said he was going to do mass deportations. SMH

I've been trying to understand their choices for years, and personally, I think it's a calculus of fear and Stockholm syndrome. Many immigrants from Latin America have fled far-left autocracies and to them, anything to the left, even our very moderate "leftists" like Bernie (who is indeed moderate, compared to the hardliners who have emulated Stalinism in Latin America) are to be feared, avoided, are anathema. The GOP knows this, and they have used very targeted manipulation to paint the Democrats as the same brand of evil socialism that destroyed their homelands and drove them to flee. We're watching in real time how fear drives poor decisions across every demographic and voting bloc. I also think that there's a sense that by getting in with the oppressors, one will be safe from oppression: look at the women who carry water for the administration - they can't be harmed if they support the administration, right? It's classic psychology, and this administration uses it at the highest and most egregious levels.

And of course there are always fools in every demographic, who just believe lies, otherwise women, Blacks, Latin Americans, queer folk etc, would only vote for Dems.

Just my two cents.

This reporting is invaluable. Desantis should have to answer for these atrocities. His political career should be over!

Rajeev's avatar

That’s the problem. Ron DeSantis came into power in 2018 passing some bipartisan legislation. But he realized quick if he wanted a future as a Republican leader he needed to push the atrocities. Florida and nationwide Republican voters no matter what they say now wanted this type of cruelty. Immigration & mass deportation were their central message in both 2016 and 2024.

Marco and Ron Desantis always wanted to be 1980s style Central American dictators. Marco looks and sounds the part he has since he first became a Senator.

This is vile: this is inhuman.

Even if one granted some legitimacy to the concept of incarcerations for certain immigration violations--a big and growing "if" in the time of Trump, since surely these violations could be dealt with in an orderly and respectful manner within the framework of immigration courts, and it would be no hardship for a wealthy nation to house detainees in a humane setting--the gleeful embrace of monstrous abuses by Trump's enforcers has now become part of this nation's history: it is woven into the story of who we are, what we are, what we are willing to do to our fellow-beings.

In the 1930s the Germans could, I suppose, be forgiven for not quite knowing where this kind of thing could lead, although if they had wished to do so they could have studied the history of Lord Kitchener's vile camps, those smug killing fields established during the Second Anglo-Boer War.

We don't have any excuse: we have history itself screaming a warning.

The German people could see only individual acts of cruelty and movement and disappearance of neighbors. I don’t think they put it all together in a coherent understanding of what was being done and any knowledge or communication of the horrors was suppressed. The Germans had become an increasingly desperate people under conditions of the Treaty of Versailles. We can’t let this happen to us.

This is the disgrace of the American people. This is what Pope Leo is talking about.

Thank you for covering this important story, Adrian, and for all your other reports as well. My comment has nothing to do with you or your reporting, but about the ever increasing comment from Trump supporters that "this is not what I signed up for." The man ran on being their vengeance, and was unapologetic about that, and now that he is doing that his supporters are shocked? I just don't get it. And, no, I am not happy at all that there are people suffering throughout the world because of this evil, wicked administration, and yet Trump is doing exactly what he said he would do, providing vengeance for people who thought they needed that, and while it is very good that many of these people are now fleeing Trump, it would be better, I think, if they were honest, and admitted that this is what they did indeed want, just not if it touched them personally. Keep up the good work and thanks.

When I was flying helicopters for the Navy, my instincts told me that we should treat prisoners like we would want to be treated. Helicopters are fragile machines and prone to have mechanical problems that kill people without a shot being fired, so we knew that if the balloon went up, we would be lucky to be a POW.

There is something sick and venal about people who don’t understand that it is only good fortune that separates people inside the cage from those outside the cage. If I suddenly became king, I know who would be inside the cage, but not in this facility- this abomination should be turned into an evangelical “Christian” museum.

Florida seems to have taken a page from the Hanoi Hilton. The saddest part is Florida voters likely won’t care and they will put Donalds in charge of the state. When it comes to Florida Republicans there is no bottom.

Jonathan Reel's avatar

Trump Republicans have no bottom, period. We know it all—Alligator Alcatraz, ICE in Minneapolis, Iran, chaotic tariffs, AI posts—and 29 percent of those polled strongly support him. Strongly! America, look at your shame.

Please God, no not Donalds!!

Thank God we still have you reporting on this. Where are all your fellow journalist ? Concentration camps in the US should be all that we are talking about

You remain the best and most trust-able source on immigration in the media. I so wish that MSNOW would expand your audience to TV watchers. We Bulwark fans need to spread the word to read you. Unfortunately I mention MSNOW because the other supposed tv media have stopped giving complete and honest coverage. But your message is so important.

Rudyard Kipling's avatar

Terrific idea. Bulwark readers need to get these reports to MSNow!

This is what happens when you begin to select guards who have previously shown violent tendencies and allowed to act on impulse with no oversight and a group willingness to protect each other and approve of each other’s violent behavior. The truth of what’s happening is being suppressed and it must become public knowledge. I doubt that even Trump knows or cares about this abomination.

Jonathan Reel's avatar

Of course he knows (see the photo), of course he cares. He takes pleasure in it.

Celia Ault's avatar

I disagree. I believe Trump is mostly indifferent to those in the concentration camps. Miller is the architect who takes pleasure in it. Trump mainly wants flattery and he will give power to people like Miller as long as the flattery keeps flowing.

Thank you for trying to keep this in the spotlight. This is absolutely disgusting.

Saw a guy wearing one of the hawked Alligator Alley t-shirts recently. I didn't need to ask him how hevvoted. Also gave the guy a wide berth, bcuz who knows how corrosive Trumpism may be just by proximity.

Why is this so surprising ; we as a country have closed our eyes and ears to the slaughter of Native Americans, and the Enslavement if blacks. So why should we be surprised that the white rich predominantly male “ government” is behind the cruelty of Hispanics and people of “ brown” color. Our history in this country has some very ugly behavior. Does not make me proud to be American.

Melinda's avatar

Thank you, Adrian, for your reporting.

If everyone who professes to be “pro life” was, in practice, supportive of basic human rights, this could never happen. It makes me very sad.

Celia Ault's avatar

Exactly the point I tried to make to so many Republican (former) friends. Comments were met with either dismissiveness or derision. This is a shame and moral failure they'll never wash off.
