I've told my sons and more than one friend: I've never witnessed a first-world country systematically attempt to commit political, cultural, and economic suicide before. We're certainly giving it a good shot, though.

When I first read this I thought, "What about the UK with Brexit?" That was certainly political and economic suicide ... but I guess on the cultural front you're probably right: Brexit was probably not a cultural suicide?

Which in a sense might be the weirdest and most insane thing happening in the USA right now - the economic and political stuff is off the scales mortal, but the cultural implosion is what really fries my brain, that whole mash-up under the pressure of the socials - Russia the rope around the neck attached to a beam, China the excess sleeping pills and MAGA the gun to the head?

I think of it not as suicide but as Russia, and China, conquering us without firing a shot.
