Here is Max Boot, yesterday: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/10/12/liz-cheney-rubicon-republican-authoritarianism/

My favorite quote from his piece is this one:

"But leaving the party didn’t just free me to reckon with the influence of far-right zealots. It also forced me to come to grips with what passes for conservative orthodoxy. Many mainstream Republicans believe that gun control doesn’t work, that climate change isn’t a major threat, that every social welfare program is about to usher in a socialist dystopia (remember the Affordable Care Act “death panels”?), and that tax cuts are always good — the bigger the better. These beliefs aren’t as nutty as the claim that Trump won the 2020 election, but, in my post-Republican view, they are also at odds with reality. They are manifestations of an ideology that begins to unravel under the slightest critical examination."

I thought of this when you wrote, "Stop fucking lying." Because one of the issues I've had with the GOP for quite a while, now, is as Stuart Stevens has said, it was all a lie. If not all of it, enough of it. So much of conservative orthodoxy and what passes for the price of admission into the GOP, these days is contingent on accepting a reality that isn't reality.

400 million guns, unfettered, and in the hands of anyone makes us all safer. Taxes (which are at historic lows) are too high, and our economy (which has been booming since 1982, with the exception of a few periods) is hurting and the only way to fix it is to cut taxes. We can cut our way to prosperity and keep social security. Barack Obama wasn't born here. Democrats are socialists. White people are inherently better than brown people. Climate change isn't real. Banning abortions is a realistic solution to a complex problem.....it's all a lie!

This explains in part why the GOP is so scammy. There is no Democratic equivalent for Charlie Kirk or Alex Jones. Democrats don't sit around for hours listening to infotainment and talk radio. There is no Democratic Plexus, or Ivermectin, or whatever other snake oil is all the rage. There is no Democratic apparatus that sends incessant email blasts and texts scaring the bejesus out of its base with lies about Trump, or DeSantis. Those scams don't exist on the left the way that they do on the right.

Then again, whatever you might say about the left...sometimes we're right, and sometimes we're not...our worldview isn't rooted in denial of objective empirical reality. It's very easy to scam someone whose grip on reality has already slipped away. Right now, the right lives in a monoculture ecosystem where dissent isn't tolerated. And it's reached a breaking point, in which the price of admission is buying into a lie.

That is a cult. We need to start treating it as such.

Part of the reason I've liked Nancy Pelosi for a long time is she's the definition of quiet competence. You rarely see Pelosi grandstand, trying to eat media time, or making the Speaker of the House job about her ego. She gets legislation passed, eats her ice cream, and moves onto the next bill.

Nothing about how she acted on Jan. 6 surprises me.
