But "cats chasing a laser pointer" is a great image. I've been looking for something like that (mostly to describe how we react to polls IMO) and couldn't think of anything good. So that's something anyway...
It IS a great simile. "From the mouths of innocents".... (well, these people seem uninvolved enough in the bigger world outside themselves to strike me as childlike innocents)
