Earlier this week at the end of The Bulwark Podcast, I had an existential dialogue with Ben Smith, editor at Semafor and formerly of Buzzfeed, about what purpose our media outlets are serving.

We were mulling over the mordant rhetorical question that summed up the entirety of the 1999 classic movie “Office Space.”

What is it, exactly, we do here?

And here’s the thing. For a lot of people in our business, especially these days, the answer is a bit cloudy.

Luckily, not for us.

We’re here to provide news, opinion, and analysis for a community of people who care about democracy, want to get smarter about what is really happening in the world, and aren’t interested in having to read between the lines or wade through both-sides BS or beltway jargon.

The Bulwark is a community that cares about the country, our institutions, and each other.

And all of us who are serving it know that the only thing we have to do is give you the unfettered truth as we see it (with a dose of macabre humor to wash it all down).

That’s it. That’s the point of The Bulwark.

Support the mission

We have been blown away by the appetite for this type of product. The idea that in my hometown, Denver, we had to move to a bigger venue to meet the demand of everyone who wanted to spend their Summer Friday night indoors watching a live podcast is something I never could have imagined. Now it’s sold out—again!

I will be grateful for every moment that it lasts and we’re going to keep working our asses off to provide a product that is worth that type of support.

SO, if you have been a podcast listener, newsletter reader, well-wisher, Twitter stalker, or anything in between but have not yet joined Bulwark+, I’m asking today that you jump on board. Join this community. Engage in the comments. Get the bonus material.

We are pumping everything right back into product because we want to continue to grow and reach new people who want to be informed and entertained, who care about our country and who damn well aren’t ready to cede it to a bunch of mendacious man-children that want to tear it down in service to their felonious toddler-in-chief.

So come join the party. Let’s fucking do this. A working democracy is a silly thing to waste.

Peace,

—Tim
