I can see "Sugar" leaving Los Angeles in future seasons and being a helpful stranger, similar to "The Fugitive" and "Highway to Heaven." A wandering do-gooder exploring the left-behind places in America would be cool.
I'm embarrassed to admit I tuned into to "Sugar" for the Colin Farrell eye candy- in such an appropriately titled series. Sorry, that's just me. But boy, Sonny is right- this series is one of the best running. Love the SciFi aspect- always love that. But it's much, much more than Alien meets Earthling. Funny how an alien's interactions enlightens earthlings. But a stranger's perspective sheds light most clearly on who earthlings are.
We bought tickets 2 weeks ago for Odyssey in the full IMAX format and still don't see it for 2 more weeks. It was virtually sold out that entire time. I finally gave up and took row 4 seats. Can't wait. I enjoyed the 2024 version, The Return, so am looking forward to this take on it.
I love Sugar. It took a while for my husband to come around to it, even though he loves Noir. I don't love Noir usually, but it is done so beautifully in this show, and I completely love that he is an alien. And I really want to stay at his hotel! 116 degrees in Phoenix tomorrow, I want to go anywhere else.
“The reason to go to the theater is that it’s one of the few places you have permission to unplug from the world, to put the phone down and lock in on one screen” ... Right, EXCEPT for the guy next to me who scrolled through his socials every 10 minutes. The one problem with the theater is that it has other people in it.
For me, open caption is important and doesn't seem to be available with IMAX. So... I enjoyed the film on a regular screen.
I see there's a pretty disdainful review of it in the New Yorker by Richard Brody. Curious to hear Sonny's reaction. The main gripe seems to be that Nolan projects anachronistic values and mores onto it. Well, yep, it's a blockbuster movie rather than a screening for classical scholars... 🙄 But he also complained about the visuals.
God, Noir is such a perfect genre. I want more noirs. Children's fantasy noir. Cold Canadian winter noir. Anthropomorphic woodland animal noir. Futuristic humans have all died off and only robots exist where all text is speech and acting is body acting noir.

As for IMAX, The Odyssey was the first movie I remember feeling that imax added to the experience.

The hook that got me into the Expanse is that the co-main character of the first book/season is a straight up noir detective. I loved it.
