This is a golden age for self-publishing. Between Patreon and Kindle Unlimited an author can get their books out there and they aren't being gatekept by publishing houses. The downside is you have to do your own marketing.

The main downside of self-published works is usually that they had to do their own editing.

The ones I read tend to pay an editor, but that and cover art is an upfront cost the author must bear. Hence why Patreon is an important part of the mix.
