This is going to be lengthy, so I apologize. Let’s forget about how the blue states would be governed for a second. Let’s talk about the plan for Red States, according to Marge. I grew up in the South in the 80s and 90s, so not exactly during the era of segregation or anything. I’d like to think it wasn’t that long ago. We had schoo…
We had school prayer up to a certain grade, and we said the pledge up to a certain grade. We prayed before school sanctioned football games, and the coaches simply wouldn’t “lead” the prayer. I always found that a little silly. Christian groups met to pray around the flagpole at certain times. There definitely weren’t any drag queens, and in a school of a few thousand there were precisely zero out of the closet gays. Thanks to Facebook I can see factually that they many of the people we expected were gay came out once they moved away. Also, I don’t think I knew one family that didn’t have a gun in the house. We were not taught evolution or natural selection.
So based on that we should have grown up to be incredibly successful, independent, strong, respectful and very grounded in reality. LOL! As the kids say. Some of us did well, some did not so well and some are now dead very prematurely. Drug deals gone wrong, overdoses, abuse of women, lots and lots of unplanned pregnancies, divorces, suicides…I could go on and on. Hell, one of my classmates was indicted for Jan. 6.
This is all very personal to me, and something that I argue with my family about so excuse the ranting. There is no panacea. I have no way of proving it, but we could have not done any of those things and who knows if it would have made any appreciable difference. What Marge is selling is an identity, and we all know that. And to be fair, those things that she’s selling aren’t necessarily bad, but they’re not a panacea. If you took 10 random people from my high school and compared them to 10 random people from a middle class high school in Rhode Island, I’m sure the RI folks fair better on average. A lot of factors that need to be considered rather than the crap Marge is selling. Southerners are indoctrinated from birth to believe that they are “Southern by the grace of God.” That's dangerous, and I don’t know many very successful people that walk around with that mindset. I’ve said it in the comments a million times, but when you believe that God has blessed (or anointed) you in some way it’s going to be very hard to look in the mirror when things aren’t going well. For many Southerners, things don’t go well quite often. Nothing inherently wrong about feeling blessed, but it can backfire. So to my Southern brethren I want to say that you’re special just like everybody else. No one is coming to get you or take your stuff, but no one’s coming to save you either. You’ve probably got nothing worth taking, sorry. Shitposting on social media is not making your community better. Biden doesn’t care about you. Trump doesn’t care about you. So please take all that energy you have directed towards (fill in the blank) (litter boxes in school) and use it fix your own life.
