Don't know if this idea applies to your specific question about online "battles", but a bit ago when I foolishly got into a social media fight with trolls/anti-woke white boys (generalization, I know) about increasing leading roles for women in blockbusters, I realized that laughing at them would be a great diffuser. And it worked. I mocked them for being sad and angry and poor little boys who couldn't take the challenge, and it was like I could see the smoke coming out of their ears from across the internet. Best of all, this allowed me to at some point just bow out and let them have their tantrums. And it worked. I know this strategy has recently been employed by alt right podcasters, fox news voices, etc. to mock the left, and it's working for them. So I say, give it right back. After you've made your valid point and offered facts, where relevant, mock away.
