I compare the impeachment inquiry, and nearly every MAGA stunt of the last 7 years, to a creationist pseudoscience-peddler "debating" a scientist. In all cases we keep hearing claims repeated, but no evidence (or at best absurdly cherry-picked to favor the wrong conclusion). But remember what their goal is, and who their target audience is. The goal is to "fire up" an audience that hates evidence, or any claim, however valid, that contradicts their fantasy. But that base craves repetition of the lies. We could probably count on one hand the number of critical state voters who will change their votes either way based on this stunt. But even if it fails miserably to any reasonable person, it feeds the MAGA voter addiction, especially for "retribution." And that can only help boost turnout. I worry more about non-MAGA voters who may get a false sense of security from MAGA stunt "failures" and use it as an excuse to not vote.

The only thing I would add is that the clown car is being driven by the Keystone Cops.

I’ve said it before. I’ll say it again. Mark Hertling for POTUS.

Pinch me to make sure that I'm not dreaming we're actually in an alternate universe where hypocrisy is the "gold standard" of GOP politics.

The Dakotas did provide free lunches and free college. Not all were reluctant like this Republican Maga group are. The Maga do not want to spend any government funds on the less fortunate.

A few comments…

1) This impeachment inquiry seems to me to be a good thing if the rest of the “inquiry” goes as the first day did. Because it will have the effect (at least to rational people) of making the “Biden crime family” stories go away. Instead of Biden having to defend himself against some murky, ill-defined charges, he can just say “they looked and looked and didn’t find anything”. And he can also point out how ridiculous it all was, to tie up members of Congress investigating before any evidence had been found pointing to Biden’s guilt (I’m still not sure what exactly the Trumplicants think that Biden is guilty of). And it’s not only pointless, but plainly vindictive (Biden should make liberal use of the “they did it to us” quote from Trump).

2) Note the use of the qualifier “rational people” above. This will make little to no difference to the Trump base. Trump will just say that they did a bad job or that “we all know that Biden is a crook” and that will be enough to convince his base of Biden’s guilt. And if the reaction to The Big Lie is any indication, some will likely even believe that evidence was found.

3) Those Trumplicants piling on Comer and Jordan have to consider this: most of them absolutely demanded that this happen even though there was no evidence to justify it. So what did they expect Comer and Jordan to do – make up evidence (maybe that’s not a question that we should try to answer)? They forced an impossible job on those two, and then seem disappointed that Comer and Jordan couldn’t deliver the goods. And, of course, it’s not the fault of those demanding the investigation. It’s Comer’s and Jordan’s. How very “Trumpy” of them. Still, it couldn’t happen to two nicer people.

4) Is there an over/under pool on the actual number of times Biden will be “investigated”?

Totally Unrelated To Charlie's Morning Missive--

I am listening to the Wolff book on Fox, and my big observation is that if even a tenth of a percent of what Sean Hannity allegedly said is accurately noted, then he needs to be fired ASAP. Apparently, he does not need the money, so he does not need to remain on contract. You do not need to love & adore your boss...but you DO need to not talk an excessive amount of sh*t about them where people can hear you. This is textbook insubordination, and in ANY other company, you would be out on your ass. Realistically, he should have been fired years ago after he appeared onstage at that Trump campaign rally. $19 million a year means that Hannity keeps his mouth shut....but then I guess Hannity lacks the sense God gave a chicken.

On a side note, Our Lady of the Badly Injected Lips Kimberly Guilfoyle apparently wore a black skintight stripper dress to Roger Ailes' funeral. In the book, she is allegedly described (by Roger Ailes) as "very sexually forward". One more thing about her alleged funeral outfit--reportedly, she was not wearing underwear and it was very obvious. Wearing stripper clothes to a funeral and deleting your panties is not you being "sexually forward"....it's you being a textbook sl*t.

McCarthy should stream House of Cards and ask himself: “What Would Frank Underwood Do?” (aside from pushing Matt Gaetz on to the tracks). I know for sure Frank would not accept being declared “out of compliance” and repeatedly extorted by these loonies. He’d get down and dirty and outmaneuver them. YOLO Kevin!

Charlie, what difference does it make if the Republicans are exposed for their ginning up nonsense against Joe Biden. The value is that it's in the publics eye and is getting talked about. The MAGA base doesn't care if it's true or not. They just want it being talked about. The people who are not knowledgeable enough to read your work don't know it's all fake and they might believe it or not. The clown show exists and is doing its job to create chaos.

I am so over the naysayers and the breathless press with their fangs out. Let's be grateful we have a coherent, experienced President, get behind him, and push MAGA out the door. Broom clean.

So not Hillary and not Bernie. Maybe Biden when he was four years younger, no wait, Barack through his support behind Hillary (not Biden.) What you had was an extremely gifted candidate in Obama (same for Bill Clinton) who gave us change we could believe in by being elected as our first black president (and was a fairly competent politician.). Followed by a extremely gifted demagogue who ran on an undertone that we had elected a black man for president and an overtone of a fictitious wall. Not that we needed to worry because as Obama said Trump won’t win, “being president is a serious job.” Another quote that didn’t age well. Since there is so much of that going around maybe I should keep my mouth shut.

Rats beginning to leave TFG's ship? "The New York Times BREAKING NEWS A co-defendant of Donald Trump in the Georgia election interference case pleaded guilty under a deal with prosecutors. Friday, September 29, 2023 4:59 PM ET Scott Hall, who is among 19 people charged, is the first defendant in the case to plead guilty." And I saw a headline on a news feed that Jenna maybe going for a deal. That combined with Kevin's monsters are turning on him. Not mention that TFG is supposed to be in NY on Monday. Not a good week for TFG's "team".

Alemany was spot on in her point about Comer losing control and allowing the Dems to land attacks. He let Moskowitz go off on a full 5 minute comedy routine where he systematically dismantled the GOP and did it in style. I definitely recommend going to YouTube and giving it a watch.

I absolutely agree with you. We've been accustomed to believing that our leaders/press will take care of things for us and clearly, that is not happening. It is up to us to do whatever we can to support the President we elected and to make our voices heard. I have a hard time talking and sometimes mix up words in conversation, which is why I feel more comfortable writing. But, truly, to see President Biden deliver thoughtful, coherent speeches with heart day after day amazes and heartens me.

You know what kills about the free lunches? Even red states had free lunches (and free college education) for their kids back in the 40s, 50s and 60s. This is NOT new; check out old newspapers. What is it? They got theirs and nobody else can have it?

Yes, noone else can have it. Racism. You know our wretched history; it's one of the most insidious attitudes-- learned very young.

Apropos of nothing:

One of the themes that keeps coming up is that we need paper ballot voting (not digital) so that there is a physical record of the vote that can be referenced in an audit. Every time I have voted using a digital voting machine, it has printed out a physical record of my vote (and I can see and check it). Is this not a regular/normal thing?

Yes, it is.
