I'm loving every second of Disney sticking it up DeSantis' backside as if a rusty, jagged flagpole -- Schadenfreude at its finest as if an extreme sugar rush. Most people who know me see me as about the most anti-corporate person in their midst. Yet, per Arthasastra, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, and if they want and need to flex their considerable muscles in order to bring down the bully that DeSantis revels in being, count me among those who will line up to support them.
DeSantis will find some way to try to make lemonade of this lemon, talking to those who eat up whatever he has to say as if gospel. But a billion dollars is no small amount of money in any scenario, and if things continue on this trajectory, up to and possibly including Disney relocating entirely to a neighboring state that is more hospitable, that will become his legacy in the end. Like all bullies fueled by their own self-importance, he is incapable of following the most fundamental advice for a leader: think and act thoroughly rather than quickly. Inevitably there are consequences over time for fools who so eagerly engage in a fool's errand.
You do realize don't you that Disney is probably making a fortune off of corporate welfare, courtesy of the State of Florida? While I like it that DeSantis is getting his head handed to him, I'm reluctant to join the celebration for a big corporation that is no doubt sucking taxpayers dry. And don't get me started on Disney essentially being allowed to set up its own government in the State of Florida. That should never have been allowed to happen.
What I remember about Florida before Walt Disney World being built is that the state was a swamp and farmland, and now it is one of the largest tourist attractions on earth. No matter what tax advantages Disney has enjoyed over the years, the benefit the state has enjoyed in terms of jobs, economic development, related businesses, etc. certainly outweighs them.
I agree it is a fool's errand. What I do not truly comprehend is this: Disney,, after outcry from employees, simply said they do not agree with DeSantis new law. I do not recall any media campaign or malevolent words to try and hurt the guv. His reaction to me seems wildly excessive and....uncomprehendable.
It started as a campaign stunt to show his "anti-woke" bona-fides. Then his inner authoritarian bully took over and he would not back down. Now he is in some fine pickle. Once Floridians realize the economic harm, he may not have such as easy time being re-elected as governor. On the national level, I think he is toast because too many people do not want the US to become Florida where open-carry of massive assault weapons is available to every crazy and kook and where women have no choice over their medical decisions.
Overwhelming need to preen about on 'toughness'. Not unlike some exotic bird that puffs up and struts about to display how powerful it is. The chicken-hawk kid from Foghorn Leghorn.
I don't think it would be wise for Disney to move, but they have been around longer than DeSantis. What bothers me is that I always thought Republicans are good for business, but DeSantis is attacking the biggest employer in Florida. Disney has been there way longer than DeSantis, and is way more beneficial to the state.
In the Harold Lloyd silent comedy "Safety Last," Harold climbs up the side of a skyscraper for a monetary prize . As he makes the death-defying climb, several obstacles impede his progress and threaten to send him hurtling downward. (You no doubt remember the scene with him dangling from the large swinging clockface.)
One of the obstacles is a little mouse that manages to climb up the leg of Harold's trousers. As Harold dances around on a tiny ledge trying to shake the mouse out, he gets closer and closer to falling.
Yes, Governor DeSantis, Disney has climbed up your trousers, and you are dancing around for your political life trying to shake it out. I'm betting that unlike Harold, you're going to fall, and the mouse is going to jump to the ledge just in time to watch.
I suspect it depends on what incentives other states might offer. Agreed that Disney would not move, with all of the upheaval involved, simply out of spite. But as a business they go where the money flows, and if Georgia, the Carolinas, maybe others, would offer them a comprehensive package that is a better long-term deal, they would have to take the offer seriously and do their due diligence on it. DeSantis is opening the door to that, quite unnecessarily. If I were him I would tread very lightly there, knowing that Disney has cards to play and no small amount of leverage. But if he is dumb enough to have picked this fight in the first place, it's hard to trust him to get smart now and see how much Disney butters the state's bread every day. It seems to be obvious to almost everyone but him and his most ardent supporters.
Disney may be considering future investment outside of red states since most red states are infected with the same anti-reality bias. (Dampened tourism to red states has to be considered as well.) It also depends on how long it will take Republican extremism to burn itself out. '24 should give it a good punch, but turning entrenched Republican states around will take a lot longer than that. It means weighing the costs of Republican leadership on business versus the cost of starting business elsewhere.
That's my take on it also. Georgia and the Carolinas are not good bets. Remember NC's bathroom bill? The state is turning redder and redder. Any southern state would be a huge risk and not worth the cost. It think it makes more sense for them to stay in Florida and fight. Because ultimately I think they have more power than DeSantis.
I can see Disney limiting their support to keeping their current parks operational and constantly pointing to the Central Florida Tourism board for any and all decisions that make the park-going experience less than fun. This would confirm that government is not a business.

Here’s the foundation of this whole stunt: the legislation is truly awful and probably illegal. What a stupid hill for DeSantis to die on.
Sorry to say Mr. Deutschmeister that Disney sticking anything up DeSantis' backside won't do much. He's already got a stick there!

As noted ... the enemy of my enemy is my friend. For now. Subject to change as circumstances warrant.

I think you're right. I fear what he might do to business if he became President. And I can't believe I'm saying that about a Republican.
Fascists are Romantics. They want to conserve/recreate a mythical past rather than an actual one. See Hermann Goering posing as a Teutonic knight.
They're pathetic.

And Republicans are anti business.
I'd like to think that snippet of video showing his braying laugh will do him in. Remember the "Dean scream?"
