Please check my math here: Abbott is poised to pardon a man convicted of murder under the guise of self-defense, while the man who was murdered would have been justified in killing his murderer in self defense?

Part of my brain melted just typing that out.

I'd love a clear, concise explanation about whose "stand your ground" rights take precedent when two guys with guns are staring each other down.

Sounds like the definition of war.

I share that problem with you. I lived in Illinois for 20 years, came back to Tx. because my daughter and family are here. I'm 65 with a modest home that is paid for. But I'm appalled at what this state has devolved into in 20 years.

I apologize to my husband regularly for bringing him here.

I am so frustrated by the fact 9 million Texas registered voters stayed home in 2022. I am so frustrated by the absolute stupidity of some voters. I am so frustrated by educated professionals I know who vote Republican without investigating who they're voting for because "you know, pro-life Christians". Kyle Rittenhouse is a simpleton who is too stupid to know the Right uses him. When he and FOX News loudly implored Abbott to pardon that murderer BEFORE a sentence was delivered and old hot wheels said he was going to pardon the killer, I was upset. I feel your anger and frustration, Jeri. I share it. And I am profoundly scared how much worse it's going to get. Abbott and DeSantis are in a race to make Texas and Florida fascist havens.

At some point in the past few months, I have transitioned from тАЬworriedтАЭ to тАЬscaredтАЭ. The country is careening out of control in favor of minority rule authoritarianism. They have abandoned all pretense of actually governing by democratic means.

George Orwell had the year wrong but a lot of other things right.

тАЬPower is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.тАЭ

тАЬThe Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power, pure power.тАЭ

тАЬPower is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is powerтАЭ

Exactly. They are creating chaos then mad when chaos happens.

I doubt that Abbott will dare talk to a reporter but the obvious questions are

"If it was the BLM protestor who shot would you pardon him?"

and

"Does this mean we can shoot anyone who is open carrying if we "feel threatened?""

Zero chance he would ever stick his head out of the right wing safe space but I'd love to see someone press him on the logic

It means you can shoot anyone who is open carrying if they are not white, male, straight, and cis-gender.

But that's the law. Now, everyone with a gun who sees someone else with a gun will feel threatened and blow him away. Unless the other guy shoots first. Texas has suspended all laws and has moved. its legal system back to 1840. It's Liberty Valance all over.

I could easily have my cowboy myths wrong, but I thought even in the time of Liberty Valance you had to check yor gun with the sheriff when you came to town?

Pretty common practice out west here back in the 1800s. Cowboys coming off cattle drives had to turn their guns into the sheriff before hitting the saloon!

The beautiful logic of stand-your-ground laws . . . .

Expand full comment
Linda Oliver's avatar

If you are a white man, a manтАЩs home is his castle, and you have the right to stand your ground there; your ground is wherever you happen to be; you can therefore transport your ground to find someone black to shoot on the pretext of being a threat to you. If you are a black man, this law does not apply. You are fair game wherever you are.

With the open and тАЬConstitutional carryтАЭ laws catching on like wildfire, itтАЩs a wonder there arenтАЩt more of these cases happening, especially with come-on-and-knock-this-chip-my-shoulder attitude spread in gun culture.

Doesn't apply to women either.

And I'm going to guess if the person defending themselves is gay and the victim is straight, it won't apply there either.

It definitely doesn't apply to women- look at all the women serving decades long sentences for killing their domestic abuser before the abuser could kill them.
