This is unmitigated BS. You don’t throw a successful POTUS under the bus for one bad performance. The refusal of CNN to do any fact checking and abdicate all journalistic responsibility was the main issue. Biden had the job of refuting a firehose of lies and trying to discuss his policy successes and future plans. What we got was 90 minutes of unchecked disinformation starting with the moderators themselves calling Trump “President.” I’m with Joe all the way. Stop whining and stand by democracy.
Stop defending Biden. He was terrible and is guaranteed to lose against Trump.
Democracy deserves the best. Joe isn’t there. It’s above him. We’ve know guys since he beat Trump in ‘20. Yet we’ve all acquiesced to this deferential nonsense. And here we are: on the precipice of re-electing the Orange God-King because of Biden and his apologists.
I am, my kids are, and my future grandkids are infuriated by Biden’s hubris.
Exactly. CNN let Trump not answer their questions, but would tell Biden his time was up. In 2 mins how was Biden to fact check many lies. Sure Biden was soft spoken, probably did have a cold which affected his voice. I hope Biden has a better debate next time and with a network that has control over Trump's lies.
Biden did not just lose the debate. In the debate he confirmed the concerns of Americans on both sides of the political aisle--is he too senile to function in the position of leader of the entire free world. There was no vagueness in his dismal performance. He was incoherent, inconsistent, both physically and mentally tottering, seeming consistently lost, chattering his comments so fast he could not complete them, failing to best an easily defeatable opponent who lied and evaded all questions which demanded accountability. Any competent Democrat could have easily unlaced Trump's nothing-new mendacities. Nothing will erase in the minds of Americans his performance. You cannot evaluate an aged person, see the obvious failure of mental competence and coherence and shrug that off by suggesting he just had a bad day. Nor can the Democratic Party--the only arrow in the quiver able to defeat the looming fascist beast--now afford to wallow in blissninny wailings, pretend that maudlin emotional indulgence equates to loyalty and patriotism. Time to get up quickly from being knocked flat and grow a pair. Embrace reality and shed the drama. Find an opponent to Trump who can, just by being all there, all in, one who can call Trump on his easily callable game show act.
LOL. You say "we". Is that a pronoun used tribally? MAGAs use that pronoun a lot. So do people who lack confidence in their own opinion. Try using "I" for personal accountabilities sake.
When you say you "don't think" I understand what senility is, again you might clarify that by offering specifics in what I said that would give credibility for such a presumptions assumption. By my lights, telling someone that they cannot use the word senility is a vain and vacuous attempt to stop anyone from labelling Biden senile. Such audacity is lost to an absolute absence of credibility. Desperation, it seems, can spawn boundless hubris. Any more than you cannot uncook Biden's toast, you cannot make senility disappear by suggesting that the word itself should not be used.
Oh my God - THANK YOU! I haven’t slept a wink what wi5 my searching for some comments that aren’t just “Well, Joe had his chance and he blew it. Time for some fresh meat.” I dare any of the naysayers to be in a debate format such as was used last night, have to listen to your opponent lie about fucking EVERYTHING, and still be able to clearly articulate 1) your position on the topic; 2) fact check the liar since the moderators decided not to do it; 3) actually answer the question asked and still find time to address the lies and true facts about the past topic the opponent is still blathering on about. CNN was never able to get the bloated sphincter-face to actually answer a single question. They made some half-hearted attempts, and when he refused, they allowed him to continue speaking! They should have cut his mic at those moments, too! Not just at the end of the allotted time!
We need a new politics, particularly the Dems, who've always shied away from knife-throwing and jiu-jitsu. We don't have experience in dealing with a very popular, demagogic presidential candidate. We need a new strategy and new tactics.
Yeah, I get that there's no magic word that can defeat fascism. But all Biden had to do to win that debate was look competent and coherent. No good choices is right.
Sadly, thanks to the media and the machinations of the morbidly rich, perception is reality. I agree with you. A Presidency is a team, and President Biden’s has been one of the best in my lifetime. But he is its face, and that will kill us. I believe a strong, vigorous ticket of younger, battle-tested Democrats can beat the Orange Excremental. Maybe some combination of Whitmer, Booker, Jeffries. There are others. Not Harris or Newsom, both of whom I have supported for other offices.
But let’s be real. Even if the second debate happens and a totally different President Biden appears, it will not overcome the impact of this one. Because in a world dominated by “influencers” and form over substance, a world which embraces all that is negative and finds the positive boring, a world, and especially a country, that wants to be entertained above all, the train wreck of tfg is a Siren, calling us all to our doom. Bitter old man that I am (76), I think both that we will deserve that and that, disabled, feeble, barely mobile, I did not do enough personally to try to stop it. I grieve for all of us, especially for our beloved little grandson and his generation. Will they even have a country in which to mature? Or a world? I have real doubts.
And yet. Vote blue in November, regardless. It is all we have. The alternative is the abyss.
They keep saying to us that the Democrats have "a deep bench." So let's see them. Show us, don't tell us. The Republicans are giving some of their potential "future stars" a lot of face time. The Democrats need to counter that more vigorously and not leave it to others later on to figure out for themselves.
At this late-stage game time, I have to agree. However, the dems (and Biden) had a chance early on to let some of the "deep bench" players sparkle or fizzle but dems are too polite and Biden made a selfish choice. Some of us saw the problem when there was time to solve it. I wrote this blog post in 2023. https://13thclown.com/?p=2954
Whitmer, Booker, Jeffries, to name a few. I am sure others have additional names to offer. Including hidden gems who have stayed back in deference to President Biden. Time to come out.
Booker and Jeffries? Real household names for the masses of voters who can’t name the three branches of government. Booker ran before annd came up bupkus. And what is Whitmer’s foreign policy experience? Who is her VP? And what about Harris? And is the country REALLY ready to elect a female president?
It's too late for "hidden gems" to reveal themselves. Jeffries isn't interested in being POTUS. He wants the House Speakership because his mission right now is to repair the disfunction of the House.
Its not throwing Biden under the bus. The calculation i am making is can Biden win in November? Without a doubt that debate made it harder for him to beat Trump in November despite all Trump's lies and bullshit. The thing is, which I assume most people are wrestling with is, does candidate B (Harris, Shapiro or etc.) have a better chance to beat Trump in November? I don't think many people can answer that with any certainty so here we are.

The debate moderator should be Colorado TV anchor Kyle Clark. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fqUdZwObK4.
We don't throw people under the bus? Unfortunately, yeah, we do. Human nature is a real bugaboo.

We have. It’s Joe Biden.
I don’t think you understand what senility is. Perhaps you should stop using the word until a professional explains it to you.

OK but how could Biden not have anticipated that? We all knew it would happen.
We need a new politics, particularly the Dems, who've always shied away from knife-throwing and jiu-jitsu. We don't have experience in dealing with a very popular, demagogic presidential candidate. We need a new strategy and new tactics.
Why couldn’t his debate team have given him some punchy one liner ripostes?
They probably did. He just seemed exhausted. If he’s sick, he shouldn’t have participated.
Agree. But you know what Trump would have made of that. We are in a situation where there are no good choices, the proverbial rock and a hard place.
Yeah, I get that there's no magic word that can defeat fascism. But all Biden had to do to win that debate was look competent and coherent. No good choices is right.
I just googled "how to defeat fascism". There are tons of resources. This is a grass-roots effort: braverangels.com

What battle tested younger Dems? Name them.
They keep saying to us that the Democrats have "a deep bench." So let's see them. Show us, don't tell us. The Republicans are giving some of their potential "future stars" a lot of face time. Whitmer has 12% name recognition. Booker is black and had to drop out last time. Jeffries wants to be Speaker and is also black.
So much for those saviors. Nobody knows who the fantasy baseball team players even are.
Booker and Jeffries? Real household names for the masses of voters who can’t name the three branches of government. Booker ran before annd came up bupkus. This country is not ready to elect a female president.

No, they don’t. I can answer that with certainty.
Ok.
