To my mind I am the beneficiary of incredible luck to have had ancestors who came to this country at a time when immigration was essentially unrestricted. Because of that, I have enjoyed all of the benefits of being a U.S. citizen for 80 years. When I see comments to the effect that the commenter has no sympathy for someone who has been mistreated by the immigration authorities because the victim didn’t do it the right way, I wonder if that person is in the same position as I am. That strikes me as a contemptible way to think about another human being.
