And what exactly did Ted Cruz think the endgame was here? Because I think in his head he had no intention of overturning an election, that this was just all fun and politics and pandering to the idiot rubes who trust r/patriot.eagle.reddit.listserv for their news but don't believe a thing that comes out of the mouth of Lester Holt. Cruz thought this was a game, like the KBJ confirmation hearings is a game for him, like threatening govt default is a game to him. Shit needs to get real for these people, or we're going to lose our democracy. There needs to be accountability.
Trump strong-armed the Georgia Secretary of State, on tape! and nothing? It's on tape! There is no debate, he was trying to get Raffensperger to overturn the Georgia election, on tape, while he was the most powerful person in the free world. Lindsay Graham did the same, but nobody listens to Lindsay. Trump committed both federal and state crimes, it's on tape, and nothing has been done about it.
I believe what we are seeing are the total narcissists seeing an opportunity to use Trump's popularity to propel their own careers. I'm sure they are telling themselves that they will be considered heroes because they aren't as crazy as Trump is. "They saved the GOP" sort of fantasy.
There are people who really believe that the most powerful person in the free world -- who had at least self-interested if not enthusiastic support from most of a major political party -- was waging a lonely, heroic battle against a massive Leviathan or Deep State, where everybody with any power was attacking and hobbling him for purely nefarious reasons.
Republicans always feel persecuted. They had all three branches locked down the first half of Trump’s term yet couldn’t resist claiming unending victimhood.
Then there are the Trump loyalists who believe that Trump was always being undermined and persecuted by "establishment" Republicans -- i.e., by people who didn't think their first loyalty was to Trump personally.
