That law was enacted in 1878 to address concerns that white supremacists would return to power and use the military to undermine Reconstruction”. Wasn’t the Act actually wanted by the south, in order to remove federal troops who’d been enforcing reconstruction? After the disputed 1878 election the Act was used to defang Reconstruction. Perhaps an uncomfortable truth that this act, now so important, was originally about letting southern states enact Jim Crow without interference from the federal government.
I had family serving during the war on terror, and as such, visited many bases and talked with more than a few soldiers. I was honored to be there. I looked up to them. They were protecting me, willing to sacrifice their lives to make mine more secure. It was truly a defining moment in my young impressionable self, being in my 20s at the time
I always thought they would stand up to immoral or unconstitutional orders. And it was something we talked about - e.g., what if soldiers were deployed in American cities (altho usually sarcastically like "no one would jaywalk if a drill sergeant was on every corner." I always thought they were why we didn't really need citizen militias - that they would be there when we needed em.
I was tragically wrong and it has upended much of my worldview. These guys just take orders, nothing more. They don't think they are supposed to consider the effects of their actions when taken against civilians. Especially their own neighbors and countrymen.
I should have seen the signs. Abu Ghraib, CIA black sites, the red warning lights were all blinking and I missed it. I feel like a fool. I'm not sure this toothpaste can ever go back in the tube now that it's so common in the ranks
We're at their mercy now, and I'm not sure if they know that and are taking advantage, or if they simply aren't capable enough to think clearly, or maybe they truly think "that's not my job."
Did noone learn the lesson the Nuremberg trials were supposed to teach humanity?
I love the way you break things down in readable bite size pieces Kim; kudos.
I am curious; there are more than an ample supply of legal talking heads filling the airwaves, and oddly enough (depending on the channel), we hear legal justification rendered. No surprise there as attorneys i have known could invariably give me either side of the legal coin.
Once this nightmare is over (with trump gone), and from a purely legal perspective (forget morality, that's obsolete currently), how will these SCOTUS and attorneys who ignored the constitution and just kissed his ring be viewed, dare i say judged?
"At trial, the government took the position that there did not even need to be actual threats—just the potential for unexpected threats—to unleash federal troops on civilians."
Nota Bene:
On February 20, the Department of State announced the designation of Tren de Aragua (TdA), Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), and five other organizations as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs). This FTO and SDGT re-designations permits more aggressive action against these groups including disrupting their banking, targeting shell companies, etc.
On March 15, the White House illegally invoked the Alien Enemies Act against Tren de Aragua.
On August 25, Stephen Miller, the president’s homeland security adviser and White House deputy chief of staff, gave an interview to Sean Hannity on Fox News saying: “The Democrat Party does not fight for, care about, or represent American citizens. It is an entity devoted exclusively [his emphasis] to the defense of hardened criminals, gang-bangers, and illegal, alien killers and terrorists. The Democrat Party is not a political party. It is a domestic extremist organization.”
On Sept. 2nd, the Trump administration announced a “lethal strike” against an alleged drug smuggling vessel in the Caribbean. Posting a video of the strike, Trump stated that the attack was “against positively identified Tren de Aragua Narcoterrorists" noting TdA had been designated as an FTO. He also asserted that the strike had occurred in (a) international waters and (b) killed “11 terrorists.”
On the VERY SAME DAY Trump threatened Chicago with a troop deployment in the same Oval Office appearance in which he announced the strike.
