Speaker Johnson: Youse wimmin should shut up and stay in the kitchen. A fetus achieves personhood … then it, and its receptacle, will be ignored henceforth.

Next up...Speaker Johnson proposes legislation to make it clear that women of child bearing age cannot be seated as a member of Congress. That the Constitution doesn't mention sex in the qualifications list for Congress is immaterial.

This reminds me of 2020 when a California female legislator was told she couldn't vote by proxy because her recent labor and delivery didn't make her more at risk from Covid than anyone else. She appeared on the Assembly Floor with her 4 week old baby and stayed past midnight because it was the end of the legislative session for the year.

Trump is NOT joking/kidding. He has no intention of leaving the White House. He will investigate some means or "loophole" that he will say gives him the right to a third term. He will go so far as to say he doesn't even have to run for office, but that he is entitled to a third term because he was cheated out office in the 2020 election.

As I have gotten older I have been less and less inclined to assume that I can read someone's mind. So when I offer a take on Trump I do so with a measure of tentativeness. The flip side is that I am skeptical of pundits who speak in definitive terms.

One thing I have noticed about the anti-Trump movement is that it can sometimes fixate on worst-case scenarios. And when those are presented as definitive takes, that can have the ironic effect of prematurely acquiescing to authoritarianism.

Does it ultimately matter whether Trump intends to get a third term if, for example, his health declines to the point where even MAGA fanatics no longer see that as a good idea?

By the same token, Trump is not immune to basic laws of political gravity. In 2028 he will be an 82-year-old incumbent who moved quickly and broke a lot of things. Along the way he may very well have pissed off a variety of people who voted for him in 2024.

So instead of letting Trump live rent free in our heads, I think that we should focus on driving up his negatives. We already have more than enough material to work with.

Trump often tells the truth before he stops himself, especially if it's a "secret" around his getting more power. Note the many times he said "I don't need your votes" at rallies, his praise for Musk, who "knows those computers better than anybody, all those computers, those vote counting computers, and we ended up winning Pennsylvania, like, in a landslide.", his boasting about a call with Putin right after the election (which Putin denied), his thanks to Roberts after his address to Congress, etc. His lackeys often have to do damage control with dismissive statements about "joking". I'm not conspiracy-theorizing, but it's not inconceivable that when he says "there are plans ... oops, I mean we've sort of talked about some stuff", the "there are plans" part could very well be true.

Is there any doubt in your mind that Trump will just refuse to leave office four years from now? There's not much doubt in mine. He didn't think he could get away with it the first time, but he's learned that Congress certainly won't stop him, and courts, including the Supreme Court can rule against him all day long, but without cooperation from the Executive Branch, they have no way to enforce their orders. If he wants to be King for Life, who's going to stop him?

Given that there’s an Election (which is run in the States, and by the States, in fact, so he can’t stop it) and assuming the US has not developed real Mass-Hysteria, & that there are constitutional candidates, and that there doesn’t appear “78 -million written-in votes for Trump”… then someone else will *be elected*. (And, no, he can’t run for VP under Vance, because another part of the constitution says, if you’re ineligible to become President, you can’t run for VP). Once *someone else is elected*, and he still doesn’t leave the WH? I suppose the new President gets inaugurated… and then the S.S. can set up a “Temporary Office of the President” in another government building, while they persuade Trump to leave, by say, carrying out The Resolute Desk in front of him. The man will be 82.5 years old at that time —-people need to stop talking about him like somehow he’s this Man of Steel guy. You think he holds on to the reins of power, with his 200 super-powerful hands, by himself?

Not sure about shallow. It didn’t take long, the Bulwark is an example, who started agitating for resistance. People are listening. The courts are stopping Felon Trump, polls show Felon’s approval numbers dropping. Even Wall Street is talking against his policies. There is a change. Unfortunately there are no real paths to unseat Congress until next year. Expand full comment
Hortense's avatar

Just because it affects her. The GOP seems to legislate against things unless they are personally affected. One example that I can think of is Rob Portman, former Ohio senator. He was against same-sex marriage, then his son came out as gay. Then he was for it. There have been a few less magnanimous examples whose details that I can't remember at the moment. The Dems seem to legislate for people, whether or not the legislator is particularly affected. Just keep an eye and ear out. I'm sure there will be more such turnarounds, particularly since Trump's actions are affecting red states. I do recall some legislators who voted against the Infrastructure Act, but then attended the groundbreaking of projects, stating their support. Their reason for voting against the act was that, while the projects in their community were worthwhile, spending the money in other communities was a waste of federal funding. GOP - For me, not for thee.
