I honestly can't understand the willingness of the entire gop to demonstrate they have no character, no ethics, and no grip on reality.

Ryan Lentz's avatar

Well their voters have no character, ethics, or grip on reality......???

David Court's avatar

The truth will set them free? Only their truths, of course.

Sorry David, they did their own research, and they’re really bad at it. And remember, a lie is not a lie, if you believe it to be true.

These guys have willingly drank the “kook-aid,” and they didn’t even need the cyanide inducements…:)

There are no penalties imposed by anyone for doing so. You or I might let shame keep us from those demonstrations, but shame is a rare commodity in the Republican party.

A guy tries to share a happy moment grilling for the first time with his daughter in her new house. Creeps on the Internet have to shred him for what they say are grilling inconsistencies. Talk about raining on someone's parade! The Internet is a cruel place!

Some "people" always look for nits to pick.

This is a classic example of the mainstream media in this country failing us. The proper headline for all of this discussion from now until election day should (truthfully) be" Trump proposes massive consumer sales tax on imported goods; fellow Republicans lie about it." Trump is a convicted felon and legally-established fraudster who day after day speaks incoherent nonsense. But that should be what gets reported, day after day. And that straightforwardly from ABC, NBC and CBS nightly news broadcasts. Because these are the facts, and they will only penetrate the national consciousness if they are reported day, after day, after day. Instead we get "Rs rally around convicted felon while Dems fret about Biden's age."

I would love to see some messaging that Trump's business model is fraud and bankruptcy. The fraud he committed while in office was 1). (not, I know) building the wall by taking money from the DOD construction budget needed to support housing, etc. for active service men and women, 2.) working out a deal with the Chinese to reduce tariffs if they promise to buy $250M of soybeans, which they have not done so and why we "needed" to give "assistance" to some farmers, 3) talking infrastructure week only while infrastructure continues to decline.

problem is no one really sees the tidal waves. it's like a blind spot in the human psyche.

In the mid 1970's, the Doobie brothers put out an album named "Once were Vices are now Habits". That is so appropriate to today's Trumpified MAGA party. They once stood for certain standards; free market, small government, you are responsible for your own actions. That has totally turned around.

DiMar's avatar

Since this thread talks about nit-picking I have to call out that the Doobie Brothers album was in fact called “What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits”.

Dave Yell's avatar

Diana, once I re read it after I pressed send I realized that error. I had that album. It had that Doobie Brothers classic ,"Black Water". Great album.

DiMar's avatar

I still have it, plus a couple of others from their pre Michael McDonald days. Ah, the happy memories of youth!

Dave Yell's avatar

Were the Dooblies better with M M or before.I like them before. Black Water one of the all time greats.

DiMar's avatar

In my opinion, they were better before. After MM joined they went more pop/funk, not my cup of tea. Black Water was one of their best.

Dave Yell's avatar

He is not my cup of tea either.

Very good food observations. I have lived in apartments most of my life in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Jersey City. We had a grill in suburban Pennsylvania. People never mention the mess it creates to clean up afterwards. Not worth the effort in my opinion.

Ryan Lentz's avatar

living in ruralish Indiana i've grilled since I was 12 and grilling outdoors = less dishes used = less cleanup.... totally confused by ur assertion.....

Kenmason57's avatar

In Schumer's defense, burgers are always raw when they're first put on the grill. And how do we know that the grill is not on? As for the cheese, it could have been applied to an earlier round of burgers that were nearly done.

More accurate Rubio quote: "Will greater trade barriers raise some prices at the department store? Perhaps, but that is a risk I'm willing to take."

:Lord Farquad Meme:

On a more serious note, let's assume his following statement — that American producers will step up and fill the gap — is true. Even if that *does* happen, I have to assume it'd take years for American producers to get up to speed at a price point that Americans will find digestible. That still means Americans will pay more in indirect taxes than they would have otherwise.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm old enough to remember when conservatives had "comparative advantage" in their lexicon. I miss those days.

Hortense's avatar

If American producers paid their workers at the level the Chinese seem to pay Chinese workers, then they would be up to speed already and have not lost any capacity. So are American workers willing to be paid less (and still pay more) to help American producers get up to speed, until the magical day when workers' wages rise and prices decrease to emotionally happy levels?

I dunno'. Let's ask Little Marco. He's already living in a fantasy world so it shouldn't be too hard for him to snatch an answer straight out of the ether.

Hortense's avatar

I think that a lot when I read what members of the GOP says. I know that my fantasy world is not that rich and detailed when compared to theirs.

Not on point with anything in today's Press Pass, but this just came over the ether at roughly 1800 NYT time Tuesday, 18 June 2024:

New York Court of Appeals Rejects Trump Request to Lift Gag Order

Trump’s demand to lift the gag order contained “no substantial constitutional question,” the court found.

Of course, this will just provide poor lil' Donnie with another excuse to cancel his "debate" with Joe, complaining that NY's "crooked court system! is gagging him so he can't say what he needs to say on TV. This will be golden for his his handlers, who are hard pressed to figure out how to make him sound better than the other guy he keeps saying mumbles and does not speak in coherent sentence. No debate, no rambling, run on sentences with no clear purpose or point.

Me thinks you are ignoring some evidence on the Shumer grill. First, why must the burgers be cooked or cooking in the photo. I usually start with raw burger meat on my grill. Don't you? Must I wait until my burgers are looking cooked before I stop for a proud Dad photo? Granted a better photo, but not a prerequisite.

As to whether the grill is on, the hot dogs have grill marks. Obviously, the grill is on. As for putting cheese on a raw burger you are correct that should wait until the burgers are almost done. But Shumer is a self-proclaimed Newbie at grilling. Give him a break.

Let’s say Trumps Tariffs (TT’s) take a $70 finished good item to $100. Do we really think the Made In Murica brand will continued to be sold at $75? Hell no- it’ll go to $105, fueling rampant inflation.

I have friends in the business world who need a specialty steel (now only) made in China. Went up 3x after tariffs, taxes, extra insurance on the higher imported value, etc etc. Had to treble his order just to get it- 3years worth I stead of 1 year. His finished costs were almost 20% higher- even on an American made product, because no one gear produces that grade of steel anymore.

severn's avatar

maga will stick him a long time, at least the core. if they were willing to think covid was fake, vaccines were killing them, and bleach was the answer ... then a little thing like high cost of goods on tariffs will be easy to dismiss as evil plotting by hidden dems.

Jim Taylor's avatar

Absolutely. But the inflation won't lie. That and the border is what will sink Biden, if he in fact sinks.

severn's avatar

they'll come up with excuses, you'll see. this is not about the rational but the irrational. people will stick to their golden calf because it makes them feel good in some way... no matter what happens.

Joe, don't be so tribal. This non-Italian might have thought they were fusilli, if for no other reason that I never knew that a look-alike, "rotini", existed, but would have certainly spotted the absence of any spaghetti under her probably never here-to-fore used wooden spoon.

DavidP's avatar

Marco will not be a VP. His debating skills are severely lacking. Chris Christie showed how easy it is to punk him. Harris would run rings around him.

Sko Hayes's avatar

Marco would also have to find another state to live in, because the president and VP shouldn't come from the same state (something about the electoral college rules).

David Court's avatar

If that is the criterion for not picking a VP, CFT will have a hard time finding one....

Italians are not the only ones who know their pasta! Do you have the inside scoop on where I can find bucatini? I love those tubes but they have disappeared.☹️

I’m of French and Welsh descent and I care about the difference between spaghetti and linguine let alone spaghetti and fusilli or rotini. Don’t get me started on cavatappi!
