I still agree with Rep. Abigail Spanberger: "Nobody elected him to be F.D.R., they elected him to be normal and stop the chaos." I don't think the problem is that Biden's normalcy hasn't caught on because we live in abnormal times. Rather, the problem is that Biden hasn't tried normalcy. I don't think the problem is that Biden's normalcy hasn't caught on because we live in abnormal times. Rather, the problem is that Biden hasn't tried normalcy. He's spent the first 9 months trying to be FDR with razor thin majorities in both houses of Congress. Independents flocked to Biden because they saw him as someone who is competent and would end the Trump initiated chaos. Biden hasn't displayed competence and the chaos has continued. The Afghanistan withdrawal was completely botched. Tying the infrastructure bill to the social spending bill was a huge mistake. Ignoring inflation has been a mistake. A lot of amateurish mistakes by the Biden administration.
The good news is that there is time to right the ship. Biden needs to begin by kicking the progressive caucus to the curb.. They almost single handily sunk Biden's poll numbers by holding the infrastructure bill hostage. The Biden folks think that the Presidents numbers will start to rebound with the promotion of the infrastructure bill. That won't work because the internal Democratic fight over its passage has tarnished what should be viewed as a monumental achievement.
Heard former Democratic North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp on one of the weekend shows. She was talking about how to better message the Biden agenda. Brilliant. Biden needs to fire some of those young staffers doing the messaging and policy and hire experienced pros like Heitkamp who understand what people who live in fly over country want.
"Biden needs to begin by kicking the progressive caucus to the curb." This. Let the Basically Bloated BS bill die a well-deserved death in the Senate, and then please, please, please do something to protect voting rights! The Trumpublicans have made it clear that voter suppression is a key piece of their strategy to make the next presidential election close. Find some moderates in the Senate to work with, just like you did for the infrastructure bill, and pass something.
Right now it looks like Kevin McCarthy, Speaker of the House will be killing the select committee in January of 2023, well before all the truth about January 6, 2021 is known. It also looks like there will be violence on January 6th, 2025. Surely I'm not the only person who can see these things coming? What's it going to take to get Biden to react?
I agree completely with what you're saying although I would point out that these so-called voter suppression bills won't make one bit of difference on turnout. They are not the danger. The danger is in those provisions which allows state legislators and Congress to override the will of the people as expressed at the voting booth. Priority number one needs to be fixing the Electoral count Act which gives Congress a blank check to throw out State electoral results if they deem them as a result of fraud. When it comes to voting you have the voters and the vote counters. The real danger is the latter. That is where the next presidential election could be stolen. Trump is not going to win at the voting booth. If he wins it is going to be because of the people counting and certifying the vote give him a win despite the will of the voters.
Yup. Bannon has bragged about stacking the local elections machinery with partisans. It's all happening in plain sight. Not sure what can be done at the Federal level, but I'd like to see at least some attention to the issue.
Well, I think this depends, Build Back Better seems to poll reliably in the 60% range, so clearly there are some independents who want to Biden go for broke on things like expanding Medicare or making community college tuition-free.
I think it's perfectly fair to say our Afghanistan withdrawal was botched, though given how quickly the government collapsed am I not sure what he could have done except not withdraw.
As for inflation, am I not sure what Biden can do about the chip manufacturers overseas being unable to keep up with demand. I guess we could start letting oil out of the national reserve, or ban exports.
But raising interest rates immediately might overcorrect the problem.
Mostly I think we are dealing with expectations slamming into reality.
Hear here, well said Paul. I agree completely that what Biden was elected for isn't what he's been trying to deliver and he needs to start or the excrement will be in the ventilation system in 12 months and more so 3 years hence.
Comments on the Vice President are also something to pay attention to. Ms. Harris had reasonable expectations that she'd be put on a career path that would end up in the White House, probably in 2024 and, despite the questions about her abilities as a candidate and campaigner, she will be very difficult for the Democrats to push aside should Mr. Biden be unable or unwilling to run for re-election. As a female person of color and sitting Vice President she ticks a lot of boxes and could very easily ignite a media storm that would deliver the Presidency to anyone the Republicans choose.
I don't think Biden has ever gotten over the cheap shot Harris hit him with on busing. And I don't blame him. The shot was extremely cheap. Biden was on the right side of the busing issue then and time hasn't proven him wrong.. Support for forced school was at like 10% in the 1970s. It was only at about 30% among African-Americans. It was a wildly unpopular policy among everyone, regardless of political stripe.
You're probably right on the mark and I can't really blame him either. It's also indicative of her issues as a candidate and campaigner. I don't think the Democrats will win with here as their Presidential nominee but I don't see a straightforward way of telling her "No" unless there is a really big ugly skeleton hiding in her closet.

EnderAK08....look at you trying to add nuance to a REALLY difficult time! (Bravo to you, thank you 😉)
