Kristin Du Mez of the Substack Du Mez CONNECTIONS is a once-obscure professor at Calvin College who wrote a book about evangelicals that went viral. Jesus and John Wayne traces the authoritarian roots of Christian support for Trump and she offers her thoughts this week on Beg to Differ on the movement today—the continuing flirtation with QAnon, the focus on “rugged” masculine leaders, and even some echoes of Islamic extremism here in the US.
Pete Wehner, who sits in for Damon, has also been eloquent on these topics. Regarding the potential pitfalls of prosecuting Trump, he says “He has not yet broken the judiciary . . . The good guys have to win every once in a while.”
This week’s show is a good meditation on accountability. Since the beginning of the Trump era, only the heroes have paid a price. That is, at last, starting to change.
