Here is what I think of my fellow Americans as a group: we have failed the civics test. I don't think that makes them monsters who want people in concentration camps, I think it shows they are asleep and letting the monsters run amok. I would say there is no excuse for it, since the literacy rate is 80% (okay, that's lower than I expected when I just checked, but still) and information is literally free. But they don't hear, they don't see, they aren't listening, and too many of those who are paying some attention are listening to really bad, disingenuous messages. The only reason I think there might be an excuse here is that the our brains, in general, just aren't up to the flood of information. Bannon's strategy is really effective.
One of my favorite YT channels, Belle of the Fifth Column -- used to be Beau -- says frequently that American citizenship is "advanced civics," or something like that. We are not a nation of people taking that responsibility on. I don't know for sure that we have the capacity to do so with just our brains. I think it might also take our bodies, too, to wake up the whole public. That's ... pretty scary.

We need to restore basic civics before we can move on to advanced civics.
