Frum’s article I think encapsulated my feelings perfectly - violence is never, ever the answer, but we should not lose sight of the fact that Donald Trump has stoked and encouraged political violence and led us to this worrisome place. I hope him and Republicans will learn from this and tone down their rhetoric, but unfortunately, I’m expecting everyone at the RNC to be out for blood.

I’ve thanked you already for linking the article, and I want to say more that won’t disappear in a “Continue reading” tab.
What a brilliant article David Frum has written. Says everything I’ve been thinking all day - except the part about every decent person being relieved Trump didn’t die, although maybe that just means I’m not a decent person, and in this case I’m ok with that. The fact is that Trump brought this on himself, and as he has sown he is now reaping. I don’t know anything about the person behind him who was killed, but I can’t help wondering what he was doing there. If he wasn’t Secret Service then he had to have known about Trump’s dehumanisation of people he didn’t like, and his glorification of violence, and been ok with it. He may have left behind a family who had nothing to do with MAGA, and I’m sorry for them, but I’m not going to spend huge amounts of time otherwise sending thoughts and prayers to people who won’t do anything except spit on them from the likes of me.
Maybe this has sealed Trump’s victory. If so, JVL is right - it’s what America actively wants. God help us.
I believe that the modern GOP has no cohesive set of beliefs other than an absolute conviction that they, and they alone, are entitled to rule. They're not a party of introspection. They are not capable of soul searching. And when they talk about "freedom", what they really mean is freedom to behave in all sorts of abhorrent and contradictory ways without consequences.
The party whose members send Christmas cards with their families posing with AR-15s was **thisclose** to having their nominee for POTUS taken out by one. The party whose representative from Georgia accused the sitting POTUS of an attempted assassination now forgets a SCOTUS ruling that would empower a sitting POTUS to do all sorts of nefarious shit so long as it's an official act. We can go on and on about how their spoken belief system is basically a room of funhouse mirrors, but you, me, and everyone else in Bulwark-land already know this. So of course there's going to be calls for blood. Of course they will escalate. If they don't, that's tantamount to treason in their minds.
There is no way any of this ends well, James. No way at all.
I just hope the violence explodes while a Dem still holds the Presidency and thus at least nominal control of the military. Hoping for anything more doesn't seem realistic at this point.

Yep, they turn it around. “Violent Dems.” Just like “Dems are fascists.” Such dangerous people, & now they’re being normalized. Or normalized again.
Yes
Where is David Frum’s article please? I’ve been refreshing The Atlantic and not seeing it there.
