I heard something entirely different from Maher though, and granted, he is a provocateur who will take alternate sides depending on the issue and the moment. That said, in this clip, it seemed he was definitely identifying with liberals and the liberal cause.
Whether, in his heart of hearts, he really wishes Trump were dead, perhaps by natural causes, is not explicit here, but I believe him when he says he didn't want this to be the day it happened for the reason he offered -- an assassination would fuel more violence and would be blamed on Trump's political opponents as a matter of course, as it already has been (J.D. Vance, etc.).
So Maher is edgy, but he genuinely believes, IMHO, that no good can come of this.
He gave $15 to a group advocating voter registration when he was 17. When he was 18, he registered as a Republican. At 20, he was dead. Clearly had issues.
