Of course they will! I agree with most of what you wrote, including the idea that this event does do some hamstringing. In a Marist poll with data through March 2024, 20% of Americans (12% of Democrats, 18% of Independents, and 28% of Republicans strongly agree or agree that Americans have to resort to violence to get our country back on track. Whence the "joking" among one in ten (seems a conservative estimate) of our friends about the shooter's aim. Violent rhetoric is rubbing off on many, despite clear FBI, Southern Poverty Law Center, Wiesenthal etc. stats making it abundantly clear the main domestic terrorism action is on the right. Thing is, hard for any party to keep its nose completely clean, and/or to avoid the perception that it has failed to do so. I may have veered off a little in this comment:)
