"As I’ve warned you before, the new anti-Trump coalition will require a healthy gag reflex because it could include many of Trump’s worst enablers."

I will gladly get past the gag reflex, but talk to me once trump officially becomes their party's nominee, and they all switch to supporting their party's nominee, because as unfit as trump is, we can't let the commie, socialist, woke Joe Biden destroy our nation....

At that point, can we once and for all agree, that the Republican Party needs to burn to the ground completely, because I'm not going to trust a one of them when trump finally dies, to pinky-swear they'll never, ever support someone as unfit just because they see it as their only path to power.... Let a viable, healthy, alternative conservative party start to rise from their ashes....

You are 100% right. None of the people mentioned have an ounce of integrity when it comes to their side winning an election. Except for Cheney and Kinsinger and they are persona non grata when it comes to the Republicans.

Yes, that's what makes them Republicans: They're anti-Dems. I just read in "Dispatch Politics" in a story about the new Georgia GOP state party chair's efforts to unite the party. How? Their mission is to fire Joe Biden. That's all they have. No policy proposals, no vision. Just united by who they hate.

That is particularly obnoxious because Biden is doing a good job. TFG would sell all of us down river to save his hide or increase his wealth. This is really, really dangerous.

Did the author think that was a good strategy,?

I didn't get that. I got he was just reporting the facts.

Really that is the giant elephant in the room. We can never trust these very recent trump enabling politicians or the large segment of trump voters ever again.

Exactly. They are willing to forego democracy, the Rule of Law, National Security, and our Constitution, all for the sake of winning with trump, whom they know will end life as we know it in our nation. Is there any doubt about what he will do in a second term? It seems like even the Never Trumpers, raised in the Conservative traditions of the Republican Party, are going to wait until it happens, when it's too late, before calling for the wholesale defeat of the GOP such that it can never re-constitute itself with these very same, supposedly "normie" politicians.

They won't call for the GoP to be defeated, they will just continue to quietly go along, hoping that THEY don't make the target list... and they slowly will make that list unless they engage in abject (even more abject than before) fealty.

As long as they can hold their seats or get positions and "be relevant" and continue to play the game, they will play the game.

By the time they get around to rebelling or acting against any of this it will be far too late for them and for us.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!

exactly. We need to keep that list handy to see what they all say once the former guy becomes the nominee. Until then - sure, it's nice that they are saying negative things about the former guy. But will they keep on doing it?

Added to your last question - and why the hell did they wait so long before damning him! They should have been doing that the second he was out of office and powerless. But no, they kept silent. That said, "the enemy of my enemy is . . . " is still not my friend, but I'll take it for now.

Why did they wait? They didn't have the Smith indictment before now.

I think Smith must have done his homework really, really well and they know it. I've considered DT an existential threat to America from the get-go. These guys thought they could control him and they couldn't. They are just now waking up to how dangerous putting an overgrown adolescent thug in power is to all of us. I think these guys know even more than they are letting on and I suspect its even worse than we know.

Agree, agree! A threat from the beginning, they thought they could control him (what the Right in Germany thought about Hitler!), and VERY likely they know more than they are letting on.

Cowards too frightened of Trump calling down his wrath on them. They haven't figured out Trump out of office only has power because nobody's got the balls to challenge him. And that includes them!

Expand full comment
SandyG's avatar

It's not about balls. They feared Trump could hurt them (and his followers could hurt their families) and their standing in the party they wanted to remain in, and they made a political calculation. That so many are challenging him now, based on the indictment, says that calculation has changed.

I agree with that. Things have moved way beyond mere political calculation.

Not just pinky-swear, but actually live out that promise. Only over time can we believe anyone has changed.
