I don’t agree that there is no way to take the nomination away from Biden and so he must do it voluntarily. There is a convention with delegates that nominate someone for a reason. Yes, it could be ugly, and we could well end up with Trump, but I think we have to try. If Biden had stuttered in the debate, or sneezed periodically, or was more hoarse, it could have been salvaged, because those wouldn’t have validated the Republican argument that he is frail and has dementia. What happened with Biden during the debate was exactly what the Republicans hoped would happen and played right into their hands. I think if Biden stays the nominee another debate would have to happen to replace the horrible performance we just saw, but we run the risk of a repeat, or worse! I think a replacement would be our best option at this point and that person should not be spewing numbers like Biden tried to do, but say Trump is a corrupt businessman and a felon who lacks any moral compass and only cares about himself - and repeat it for everyone question.

Legally there is no way to do this. You are right that there used to be a way to nominate and move delegates from one candidate to another in the 1960s. After the 1968 election they changed this because delegates were moving from one candidate even though they “shouldn’t have” because that said candidate won the primary in that state. They enacted laws in each state based on different rules so that the delegates are required to provide their delegates to the winner of the primary (this changes from state to state. Some are 100% of the primary and some are proportional. Changes state to state based on election laws passed in said state AND they differ between the parties).

Biden has already won the convention. So has Trump. I think Biden surpassed the delegates needed to win the convention in late February or early march).

The convention is a coronation. It hasn’t functioned as anything but that for 50 years.
