At this point, we don't really know what is going on with Biden, but if he does choose to or is persuaded to withdraw, I don't think we need to assume that the convention would be a mess. Clearly, there were back room discussions in 2020 and there may be again, and I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. A candidate like Sherrod Brown could clean the Donald's clock in a debate and conceivably be a great relief to many voters. Yeah, another boring white guy, but I am personally okay with boring white guys who happen to be decent, smart and thoughtful, and I bet a lot of Americans are as well regardless of their own racial/sexual status. Practicality won in 2020.
You think a small town mayor was a solid candidate in 2020? Come on. I love mayor Pete. He is awesome. There is absolutely zero chance he wins the presidency. He was Vivek this year in the Republican presidential primary. He ran to get name id. He LOST his re-election in a town of 100k.
This is not 2020. This is not a primary where 50m voters…vote. This is 4k activists. Be clear here. These are activist. No one wants to be a delegate that is NOT an activist because it’s the stupidest job ever. These are people (no fault…not judging) who are labor union leaders, random legislators, lawyers, etc. in random states. It will be much watch tv. Honest question: did you think the republican speakership nomination was good for republicans…that’s an open convention. You realize that right? That was 1968 (btw you realize if someone wins they don’t even choose their vp right???). It will be days of backroom dealing with multiple candidates being dropped and added just like Mike Johnson (he was the 5th choice). This is not to say we shouldn’t drop Biden but we have to understand that for 7 weeks every article on every paper will be “Dems in disarray.” Then, whoever wins, has to put together a national campaign team, raise a shit ton of money and then fight Trump. Btw, no chance Trump debates some no name governor from some random state.
Honestly, the only way the convention isn’t a complete shitshow is that they nominate Kamala. However, knowing dems this might not even be a straight forward plan.
Although I also love Pete, no, I don't think that he was ready for the big chair. My point was that he and others high in the polls set aside their personal ambitions. Of course, a brokered convention could be messy, but from what I've been reading, campaign funding may be a bigger issue.
So let’s say he drops out. I don’t think he will but let’s say he does. I think we are hosed. First, the convention will be a shitshow. There will be massive protests against Israel. Why because these voters have their absolute BEST chance to get the next president to do something different. Maybe it works maybe it doesn’t but it will be crazy and look awful for Dems. Second, after the shitshow of the convention they choose a president and Vp. Whoever they choose has 3 major things working against them.
(1) most importantly no name ID. No matter how much of a junkie you are for politics most people won’t know ANYTHING about these candidates. I love politics but I couldn’t point out some of the “good” candidates in a lineup. More importantly, I have no idea where they stand on any of the major issues people will be voting on. Shoot even with my own governor, Gavin, I don’t know what he would do with Ukraine, Israel, climate, homelessness, guns, etc.
(2) no team. None of these people, other than Kamala has a presidential campaign team. None have run a national election.
(3) no money. They don’t just get Joe Biden’s money. Combine the 2 other above points you are in real trouble.
This is not to say it WONT work but people, I find, skip over how absolutely painful and potentially disastrous this could be. Not only that all the main contenders poll WORSE than Biden against Trump. Maybe that changes but it isn’t obvious why.
'Shoot even with my own governor, Gavin, I don’t know what he would do with Ukraine, Israel, climate, homelessness, guns, etc.' - LOL, I'm sure you want to know but I think most Americans just want their President to make them 'feel good.'
No no no Suzanne. My President needs to solve all my problems. In fact, if I have a problem it’s the presidents fault for not fixing it. AND if he does fix it I have a few other problems for him to solve ;-)
Years ago, I was hanging out with a younger friend, 20-something at the time, and some guy approached us for money with a sad story about his cousin or brother or someone running off with his wife, and after he shuffled along, she said to me plaintively, 'What president is going to save us?' I said none, and something to the effect of preventing personal problems is not any president's job. She seemed to get it at the time, but she is a Trumper now :-(
My brother is in town. We are from a big family (I’m one of 8) so we were down at my stepmom’s place for a pool day last weekend. She had Fox News on both tv’s at full volume. She went on about how the trials were political malpractice. It’s my 3 sisters and 4 brothers along with like 12 nephews and nieces and we just are like “yeah yeah yeah. Totally. Then shuffled outside.” Her dog is named…Tucker.
