The American Media is so shit at this, I grew up in England and I’m used to seeing politicians get a proper grilling, I will never understand the deference that is paid to the position of President in a country that rejected the idea of having a king.

Access. Look at what the House GOP did to the press when they elected Mike Johnson. If you want access to politicians, you have to play nice or they ignore you. In England, there may be a price to pay among the electorate for this behavior. Here, you'll never see the New York Times complain that politicians no longer answer to the press because that means it will take them even longer to get their quotes. It's a power balance, and thanks to FOX and other propaganda, politicians no longer need the media to spread their message, so the media no longer has power over them.

This is baffling to me as well, and I grew up here. I once thought it could be because of the fused roles of the presidency (head of state + head of government) and the desire to convey appropriate respect. I now believe that this is simply due to our having no standards or expectations at all for political figures.

That's why you guys make hardball journalists like Mehdi Hasan and Jonathan Swan, and we make softball journalists like Megyn Kelly and Chris Cuomo.

I agree, but I do have to point out that the great JS is from Sydney, where I happily reside now, but he is very much cut from the same cloth as Mehdi, Jeremy Paxman and the superb James O’Brien. That interview JS did with that jackass ex president was just glorious and exposed him like nothing else has.

He is the most weak and pathetic little man child I have ever seen, but the desire for retaliation and unstoppable desire to smite anyone that dared hold a mirror of truth up to his facade of a life, is so powerful, I fear it will doom us all. The world is watching, praying that you can sort your shit out. I wish you luck, I wish us all luck 🤞

Yea I forgot about that with JS. You can hear Sydney in his accent. My bad for generalizing that out.

To the rest of your point, I'd say we probably wouldn't have Trump rising to power here in the first place if it weren't for you guys sending Rupert Murdoch over here so he could radicalize half the country in the run up to 2016 ;-)

Not at all mate, I actually thought he was English, but his Dad is a very well respected Dr over here and during Covid, he was one of the most trusted voices (Dr Norman Swan), but he was actually born in Glasgow, funny old world innit.

That said, Murdoch is one of the most malign figures in the world today, his media empire has spewed hate filled poison into politics in Australia, England and most of all America. How he has used your freedom of speech, the classification of the most watched hours of his “news” channel as “opinion” to avoid any accountability for the bullshit they peddle. “Just asking questions” my arse.

No hyperbole, the world is at a tipping point and if that fucking piece of shit gets in again, it is gonna be a very very dark time for the world, possibly game over.

On that note, I want to wish you a very happy Christmas and very enjoyable conversing with you. Take care.

David
