I think it is unlikely that Trump could win the Republican nomination unless the field is crowded. Remember that Trump only got about 1/3 of the Republican primary vote until he had the nomination sewed up. De Santis, Youngkin and Haley could all beat him if -- but only if -- they don't all throw their hats into the ring.

I have a theory. DeSantis (or Youngkin or Haley" )_ should say, the moment Trump announces a run for the nomination, something like "I think every Republican candidate for president in 2024 should say something like "I urge all candidates to follow President Ford's example, pardon Donald Trump, and end our long national nightmare." That would be one of the first question the candidates would be asked in the debates. Trump of course would say he would pardon himself, and the pardon would stand because his attorney general (probably a Syndey Powell clone) would observe it. But it would lose Trump votes in the primary. And is he going to run as an independent against a "get-out-of-jail-free" card? I doubt it. The pardon plan cometh.

May it be so but ...
