JVL, I just had a conversation with my sisters and invoked your name. No matter they had no idea who you were. They’re both in their 50s and 60s like me, and they both asked who I thought was going to beat Biden in the primaries. 🤦🏼♀️ I calmly and carefully explained that Biden is our candidate, to which much moaning was heard. And then they said, at least there’s a chance that it won’t be Trump when Biden loses. And again I explained Trump is the nominee. Having young pro-BDS activists in their families, they’ve been convinced that Biden is evil.
When I told them it was either we all get together and vote for Biden, or we get Trump. “Maybe we’ll just vote down ballot. It’s all the same.” I was unable to convince them that democracy actually matters. I made a tiny amount of headway when mentioning Dobbs, but that was it.
It stands for Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions against Israel. My niece has been heavily involved as a leader through college and beyond, to the point where her name is on a corporate list of "don't hire this person ever." Which she says she doesn't care about since she'd never work for any corporation. ::sigh::
Indeed. I was once young and idealistic, so I get it! I'm more worried about my fully grown sisters. They've seen enough of life to know that there are some things they don't know. They think Biden should be on their side calling for a ceasefire - having no idea that hugging Bibi bought the Palestinians a ton of time while Biden negotiated for time and aid. But they somehow think a line in the sand would help, somehow.
You have to find a way to discredit the pro-BDS movement. They are calling what Israel is doing genocide. It's not. I wrote this to a friend this am after I read that the Iranian Foreign Minister in a speech before the UN General Assembly said that the American statesmen and military forces are now "managing the genocide in Palestine."
This is what I wrote to my friend (who is a conservative Jew):
First of all, what Israel is doing is NOT genocide. The definition is "the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group." Their aim is not to destroy all Gazans, only their terrorist leaders who have attacked them who hide behind civilians. That is not genocide.
Secondly, given that Hamas' mission is to destroy all Jews, it's a bit rich for Iran to call what Israel is doing genocide. Iran is projecting. Their openly stated goal is the destruction of Israel. That's a nation. That's genocide.
Projection is a defense mechanism through which narcissistic individuals, like Trump, and all authoritarians “project” or see their own negative behaviors, emotions, and traits in someone else? That's what Iran is doing, and our youngins are falling for it, just as badly as MAGA has fallen for Trump's lies and projections.
Interesting because if these supporters were dropped off in the middle of a Hamas area what do they suppose would happen to them particularly the ladies.
You can't tell, you must ask. Ask your niece what her vision for Gaza is. How does Hamas govern? What is society like? Let her spin her dreams through to the end, where she sees that Hamas would create another undemocratic state that can't function. You might start by asking her where the leaders of Hamas are located, and why they're not suffering alongside their fellow Palestinians. Good luck...
The Atlantic had a good article about Hamas. Hamas tells you who they are. Maybe have her read that and then visit the Holocaust museum. Has she read about the holocaust?
She's human, isn't she. That's true for many, many people. For some reason she's got her identity tied up with the intersectionality movement which holds that various forms of oppression — racism, sexism, classism, ableism, and homophobia — constitute an intersecting system. BDS is included in that, as they see Israel oppressing Palestinians. But Hamas is different from the Palestinian people. Hamas is a terrorist organization like ISIS funded by Iran whose openly stated goal is the destruction of Israel. That's a nation. That's genocide. I bet she doesn't understand that.

I’m ready to jump out a window.😩
I’m lame I guess but what is “BDS”?

When you’re young (with little experience) the world is so simple... snd then you learn how much more nuanced and complex everything is.

That is very dark.

I love our youngins but they're ignorant.
I wish I could break through with that. My niece keeps reposting literal Hamas posts. She believes only that which confirms her bias. 🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
Interesting because if these supporters were dropped off in the middle of a Hamas area what do they suppose would happen to them particularly the ladies.
Exactly. I've noticed who is in all the photos and videos. And who isn't.
You can't tell, you must ask. Ask your niece what her vision for Gaza is. How does Hamas govern? What is society like? Good questions, Sheri. I'll try it, if she's even willing to discuss with me. But if I ask her vision, maybe that'll open the door.

That is incredibly depressing
And this from what were reliable Dems. One ran for local office. ☹️
