“Anyone who is unwilling to say (Trump) is unfit to be president of the United States,” Christie said, “is unfit themselves to be president of the United States.”

This has been the central truth of the matter going back to 2015. A whole lineup of candidates failed this test in 2016 and the remaining candidates fail this test today. "Contemptable" barely begins to capture the depravity of the Republican Party.

The reality is that Christie represents the problem of every old GOP hand: if you're not with Trump, then you're basically a Democrat.

This happens in parties. It happened with the Democratic party when it embraced civil rights; if you weren't for civil rights, you became a republican. Parties often have splits like this every fifty years or so, when the people who have been in charge die off. It happened back when the founding generation died off and gave way to their children's generation. And it will happen in the future as well, as sure as clockwork.

But the point of talking about this is that anyone who is against Trump needs to accept that this means becoming a Democrat. It means running as a Democrat, supporting Biden, and supporting Democratic candidates. Because there are no 'normal' Republicans that aren't either compromised or leaving. You have watched and will continue to watch them die off like a species going extinct; whatever comes after Trump on the right will not look like whatever came before it.

That's going to be very hard for a lot of former Republicans who have based their identity around being a Republican. But what Christie needs to do now, having failed to stop Trump or sway his voters, is publicly endorse Biden and say 'look, I tried as hard as I could to get through to them, and they won't listen. The only way to save America is to vote for Biden.'

And if he really, genuinely believes that Trump is a threat, then he needs to do that. If he can't do that, then he's only willing to oppose Trump up to a point.

But the reality is this: Trumpism IS conservatism now. It is the Republican party now. Even without Trump, that is what the voters on the right have chosen. And if you oppose that, and if you think it's a threat, welcome to the Democratic party.

Now, it's not going to be fun; most Democrats won't like you for all your previous views. The good news is that most Democrats hate other Democrats anyway, so this is basically how things work in that party. It's why so many people thought that it would be the Democratic party that imploded after Obama, not the GOP, because of how many different groups there are that all hate each other. As it turned out, the monolithic GOP was much easier to compromise.

But back to Christie. Those that oppose Trump and think he's a threat need to take the ultimate step, to create a permission structure for others like them to vote for Biden. Because if they can't bring themselves to do that, then they're still holding out hope that the GOP will change back, and it won't.
