Well, they didn't flip on a dime in 1965, or any other year. It was a gradual process that took decades. But yes, the Democrats of today are radically different from the Democrats of the past. (Frankly, I tend to think they've changed too much for their own good. The old-time Democrats were self-consciously champions of the poor and working-class, but ever since Bill Clinton they've become much more oriented towards upscale professionals. I suspect the Democrats of today would feel much more comfortable with Thomas Dewey than Harry Truman.)
