You're correct that he is capitalizing on his own bovine scat, and that many would sell their soul for $35m a year. OTOH, the man comes from a wealthy family ("Tucker Carlson was born into a family of wealth. His father is a multimillionaire[ -]" even if he did increase his wealth through his own endeavors) and his annual salary didn't skyrocket until his pandering (read lying) to his rapidly growing audience dramatically increased the price of ads on his show:

"During the months of April, May and June, the average price of a 30-second ad on Tucker Carlson Tonight was $13,779, the highest rate on cable news" (https://www.standardmediaindex.com/press/fox-news-tucker-carlson-show-boasts-most-expensive-cable-news-ads-study-finds/)

His income, again, increased as he continued to feed his gullible viewers exactly what they wanted to hear, reality or not. Your citation points out that his salary doubled in the 1st two years of TFG's reign, from $8mil (2017) to $15 mil (2018), and doubled again to last year's $35mil; His net worth has gone up ~41% in just four years (through 2022). This coincides directly with his rise to godhood in the eyes of the faithful.

His self-degradation occurred when he went along with the joke, feeding it back loudly into the echo chamber and then kept the loop going for the sake of ratings (I don't think he prostituted himself for the money). The spiraling descent can be gleaned from the increases in his salary. Either way, Mr Carlson went from a voice worth listening to in the early 2000s through about early 2016 to being nothing more than a turd floating in the pool of humanity.
