The notion that you can't make up your mind until you step into the voting booth and somehow magically come face to face with your destiny (guided by the booth fairy I suppose) ... is ridiculous and irresponsible of course.
But "cats chasing a laser pointer" is a great image. I've been looking for something like that (mostly to describe how we react to polls IMO) and couldn't think of anything good. So that's something anyway...
