“So either Trump does not have the baseline intelligence to understand how the government and the US Constitution function- or he has suffered from some mental decline which has rendered him incapable of basic deductive reasoning”.

Those are not mutually exclusive states and both may be true.

Equally important is that Trump is a malignant narcissist who really does believe the rules don’t apply to him. He believes he is (or should be) the maker of the rules.

He neither knows nor cares what the Constitution says or means. It’s irrelevant to him. What matters to him is what he wants.

This is why I have no use for Larry Hogan and not much for Liz Cheney.

Trump was no mystery. Ever. He was very obviously a spoiled manchild resistant to anything but serving himself.

The responsible answer to his nomination was to oppose him. The responsible answer to his election was to resist his use and abuse of power.

When the party began to mold itself around him no matter the outrage, responsible party members should leave and denounce the party, and do the requisite soul searching to figure out how they got here.

Remember! Trump was fucking egging on armed mobs in Michigan and Virginia, states that were following the CDC recommendations for pandemic mitigation!

Anyone could see that it was a powder keg. Anyone with half a brain knew that a sane reasonable president would've been acting to deescalate the situation.

Where the fuck were the supposed adults?

The rest of us knew what Trump was. What's there in the Republican party, every damn one of them is complicit with keeping our country under the cloud of a pathetic, sniveling manchild who failed upward into the most important job on it planet and then did it damn near as bad as he possibly could've. We were only saved from worse by virtue of his lazy incompetence in translating his malice into action.

Trump is a dumb beast. He probably means what he's saying here because he's too stupid to know better and nobody around him now has the energy or inclination to explain how he's being an idiot.

But the real threat has always been his cowardly enablers. They had the power to fight him, to derail him, and they didn't.
