I’m beginning to think that saving the country from Trump is a waste of time. Serious let the country go under; I’ll move to Canada .

The Republicans will sit on choosing the next speaker past the next budget resolution deadline. Swallowers of Trumps (Putins) venom with an absence of their own constituent's well-being. The worse is yet to come.

I'm pleasantly surprised the Bulwark is solidly blaming the Republicans for this. The door is wide open for a both sides analysis given it required all the Dems to vote him out too (regardless of the reasons). They and most of the other centrists usually walk through that door pretty eagerly. Perhaps the other shoe is dropping at long last.

Kind of hard to overlook the whole "he's trying to impeach a Democratic president over....something his son who has never been in government did." McCarthy has been a complete dick to Democrats....exactly why should they sign up for more of that by bailing him out?

McCarthy is the living embodiment of, and the cautionary tale for, the adage, "if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything." He deserves his place in history.

Is anyone also a bit worried that Gaetz is running for Speaker?

When you make a deal with the devil, the bill always comes due eventually. In a way, it's a blessing for McCarthy and for the country that it happened rather quickly. McCarthy made his bargain with Gaetz and the Freedom Caucus, and they have called it in. He should never have agreed to everything they wanted to get the speakership in the first place. They are classic blackmailers who get paid off and then demand yet more. McCarthy surrendered his self-respect to them and ended up with neither respect for himself nor the respect of anyone else. In the meantime, none of the Freedom Caucus members were in the least concerned with getting the country's business done. It was all about getting attention. "Look at me!!!" What to do now... It seems unlikely that such a Republican exists, but it would be nice if they located someone with integrity who has and acts on principle. Others can disagree with those principles, but at least they provide a solid, not an ever shifting basis for debate. Such a person would be particularly useful if s/he recalled why voters sent her/him to Washington in the first place. They work for us. They become relevant by accomplishing things and solving problems. If they are not prepared to or interested in doing that, there are lots of other reasonably lucrative jobs out there.

According to Politicususa, Ds asked Kevin to postpone the vote so people could attend Sen. Feinstein's funeral. He refused. He brought this on himself. https://www.politicususa.com/2023/10/03/kevin-mccarthy-dianne-feinstein-funeral.html

100%. He lied about Ds and tried to gaslight them too many times for them to have any sympathy for him.

And it was juvenile performative nonsense, in hopes that the “base” and the crazy wing of the House GOP would be impressed. “Look, Kevin is sticking it to the Dems.” They weren’t impressed, and he completely lost the support of the Dems in the process.

McCarthy made a deal with a den of snakes in order to obtain his heart's desire. It's almost biblical or, at least, Faustian.

I wonder if the man from Bakersfield is going to throw his hat into the ring for senate. After all he's got lots of free time now...

No chance. He is the equivalent of Sinema in Arizona. Nobody likes them. Dems hate him; MAGA just bounced him. Plus, the R’s can’t gerrymander a Senate election. He would lose bigly.

No doubt he would lose, but I see him doing it to make the statement that he is giving people a "choice" since all you hear about are the three Democrats who are in the race now. Either that or he stays in DC and becomes a lobbyist. I sure don't see him coming back to Bakersfield.

So, if McCarthy is out, are the "rules" that were put in place when he was voted in binding, or does the new speaker get a "do-over". Will the new speaker ever get to see the mysterious "list" agreed upon by McCarthy and the holdouts? I keep hearing how this person lied and that person lied, but is there anyone that actually knows (or believes) there is a concrete list to prove what reality is? I;m watching McCarthy's press conference while he's spouting rainbows and listening to how he (and the American people) were betrayed by the Democrats because they "sided with the 8 rabid Republican members" and voted him off the island.

The rules are in place for the duration of this Congress, unless the person -- if any! -- that they convince to drink from the poisoned cup insists on changing them as his/her price for playing. I'm looking forward to multiple tryouts of the Parade of the Sock Puppets, and to the scummy Patrick McHenry stuck as Speaker pro tem for a long time, maybe for the rest of this Congress. North Carolina certainly isn't "sending us its best" in him, so he's a logical choice.

"BREAKING NEWS Kevin McCarthy told Republicans he would not run for speaker again, according to lawmakers who attended a closed-door meeting. Tuesday, October 3, 2023 7:17 PM ET"

So he bowed down and sold his soul for a speakership of 9 months. Pathetic.

Gaetz wants to get rid of McCarthy, because McCarthy voted with some Democrats.

So Gaetz votes with the Democrats to get rid of McCarthy.
