That little tidbit is worth remembering only if you also remember that those Democrats eventually switched to the Republican party.

Indeed they did. The comment's not intended to criticize Democrats, it's intended to criticize the country's history and note that Trump's not as extreme an outlier in that history as we might think.

Sorry, but he is the extremest outlier in our history. Never before has a wannabe president no matter their party denied the results of an election, told repeated lies about everything under the sun, has flat out said he never promised to support the Constitution and would, if we let him, throw the Constitution out. And another huge difference is that people like him, if they existed and they probably did, didn't have the media reach the Orange Snake has. Like it or not, he is the biggest threat that the country as a whole has ever faced.

We had an actual Civil War because the South refused to accept the results of an election. I think that was a bit more of a threat than Trump.

The thing is your comment echoes MAGAs assertion that the Democrats are historically the true racists and pretend the same sort of people who were Democrats until 1965 are still Democrats. A leopard doesn't change its spots they say. But the Democrats DID change their spots.

Well, they didn't flip on a dime in 1965, or any other year. It was a gradual process that took decades. But yes, the Democrats of today are radically different from the Democrats of the past. (Frankly, I tend to think they've changed too much for their own good. The old-time Democrats were self-consciously champions of the poor and working-class, but ever since Bill Clinton they've become much more oriented towards upscale professionals. I suspect the Democrats of today would feel much more comfortable with Thomas Dewey than Harry Truman.)
