My son and I saw the Flash and loved it. Great movie! The real problem is recent DC movie’s reputation. A shame since folks will be missing out on a fun show.
There is a glut of theatrical movies when you factor in mainstream and arthouse/indie films. Now compress too many movies within the summer time frame with high ticket prices.. and the economy don't forget restaurants are in trouble in many cities. People are broke. People with money start to sit on their money for "the best choice", too much choice and people don't choose.
Now before the what about ism of the internet and the howler monkeys, and pandemic conspiracists kick in. Let us recall a period from the before times 'The Summer of 2017' people have forgotten the lessons of that. All failure is cyclical AND there have been too many movies for most of the 21st Century.
Streaming will only make this worse.. End the glut. Rant over. :)
Being over 80, I suppose I shouldn't complain that few of the movies you all review have little interest for me or my wife. Most of them seem to fall in the category of multiplex/multiverse CGI extravaganzas for viewers in the 13-35 age group. I do enjoy the "controversy/non-troversy" segment for its insights into movie industry or pop culture activities. But, as a Bulwark subscriber, I'm sure there are other mature subscribers like us who would also appreciate reviews of movies, whether in theaters or not, that have mature themes, well-written dialog, and coherent story lines.
Considering the last three DCEU movies have all underperformed, it’s not shocking this flopped. Personally, the last DCEU I bothered to see in theaters was Birds of Pray. As for the most recent DCEU movies, none have looked even stream-worthy to me and considering the box office numbers it looks like a lot of people agreed with me. So unfortunately for The Flash, it’s hard to get people to show up to your sequel/spinoff if they haven’t bothered to watch the movies before It. And I think the general disinterest in the idea of DC comics universe has more to do with the failure of the flash than Ezra Millers many crimes. Though the I’m sure the main actor committing a comical amount crimes recently hasn’t helped. Like Iron Man wasn’t shot and released when RDJ was still addicted to heroine and breaking into neighbors homes.
Sonny, my son (6) and I had already purchased tix for a showing of the Flash this Friday in IMAX prior to this pod posting... whoops... hopefully it’s more entertaining than the last movie we saw in theater together (Sonic 2) !?!?
I think Alyssa's explanation of the flop has the most traction. The Arrowverse show, while I have not watched it in years was fun and had great characters. Miller and the crimes they are accused of in contrast are just icky. If you are a low information movie goer which are you more likely to have heard that WB execs think the Flash is the best ever or that the star has gone on a multi state crime spree and is in rehab.
I took WB’d word when they said that the execs believed BVS was going to be The Dark Knight on steroids in terms of both box office and critical response (it’s not good at all, but I get why people who don’t actually care about superheroes would think it was what audiences wanted), but I don’t believe them with The Flash. It’s a half-assed flick.

Wes Anderson's ASTEROID CITY is on the menu next week, so hopefully that fits the bill.

Update: the Flash was more than entertaining... it was actually pretty awesome
Hmmmm
Just one man’s unconventional take, I guess
Perhaps I was drunk on IMAX, but I legit enjoyed it
Concur with your take on the worlds colliding bizarreness, but otherwise I was a happy customer
I liked it more than most seem to have! But it definitely has issues.

Which got into People magazine approx 18 mos/a year ago, and multiple online platforms.
“He’s accused of a multi-state crime spree!” Yes, exactly. Thank you. Major ick.
Theater flops abound, while several new high-quality shows on Apple+ and MAAAAAX go unreviewed. Where are the hot takes on Silo and The Last of Us?
We did THE LAST OF US! https://audioboom.com/posts/8267514-is-the-last-of-us-the-first-great-video-game-adaptation?playlist_direction=forward
Takes, yes, but are those really 'hot takes'?
And the size of Silo’s audience is ... well, there’s some question as to whether it’s a “hit” or a “hit for Apple.”
Hub and I are trying to watch it. The unrelenting grey is wearing me down.

MAAAAAAX!
