A hopeful economic message from an upbeat authentic messenger. How refreshing. Put all the pearl-clutching pundits in a room to argue about policies while the city (and country) collapses.
The problem centrists have is that (1) temperamentally they just aren’t built to put themselves out there and (2) they only try to make news by punching left
This is about consultants but re actual Democratic pols, I don't know. Yes, Mamdani won, but Mikie Sherrill if my congresswoman and other dems in NJ are similar.
No suggestion but maybe we need to be more accepting of differences in candidates from an imagined template.
You forgot to mention one thing: His pro-Palestinian, anti-Zionist policies -- which he does not hide, except from those who don't understand his thin attempts to paper them over -- are popular with the university-radicalized 20-and-30-year-olds who were the heart of Mamdani's campaign. Ponder this: Since Harry Truman recognized the State of Israel in 1947, every major Democrat has been pro-Israel, pro-Zionist. That is now over. It's good that Bill Kristol's late father is not alive to see his son's tepid, I'm-not-sure, he-is-a-fresh-voice..."critique."
But it is time for Dems to understwnd that young folks - so 40 ish, really don't have the same relationship to the holocaust or Israel that old folks do. I live in a mostly Hispanic town and they see the world fron a perspective that has the US and Israel and part of a white hegemony - and they as oppressed.
So Dems may need to keep the young in their tent even if they disagree on Israel.
30 years ago, I read of an emerging "radical middle." Though it fizzled quickly, it seemed closest to my ideology, more conservative on economics and crime, but not a "bleeding heart for the rich" like most self-described conservatives. Center-left on social issues, but not a "bleeding heart" there either. And anything but moderate, a word I disliked then and now. Since then, I have realized that I am above all "anti-authoritarian." That's what the US needs now more than ever. Whether to the right of Liz Cheney or the left of Bernie Sanders, or somewhere between, candidates need to put their own differences aside and come out swinging against the MAGA cult, its assault on the Republic, and its criminal double-standard on law, responsibility and accountability.
I'ld like to see how his focus group before the 2024 election (included in the piece) would now be responding to those questions. Alot of the people appeared to be non-white citizens(or not citizens) - how could they not know how bigoted dt and regime would be. They misjudged and were totally lied to. That's a feature of this regime. And, several respondents were not happy with the treatment of Gaza and look what post election dt has done about that.... I can only think that they heard what they wanted to hear without really examining the motives of a felon-in-chief and his band of scumbags......Elect a felon, you get no honesty or integrity. Just more grift sprinkled with alot of cruelty and runaway corruption.
I'm laughing at all of the pundits freaking out over this guy's candidacy and his crazy Socialist ideas, like a few goverment-owned grocery stores. Compare that to someone saying "let's provide medical care and retirement benefits to every single American once they turn age 65, for the rest of their lifetimes."
A candidate who doesn't have the ability today to be seen as "authentic" won't stand a chance of winning an election. Voters have always had the ability to sniff out the "fakes". The old guard is now seen as afraid of everything and in this new brash political environment this translates to "weak". It is a reversal of previous political measurements and data analysis, based on the idea that truth is no longer respected by the population. We've now injected spin into our world to the extent that we can justify poor, unethical voting decisions in whichever way that individually benefits us materially or supports our incomplete, selfish worldview.
The political data analyst that develops a scale of "authenticity" using actual data points will make bank in the next two elections.
The rise of Trump is emblematic of the demise of the practiced politician. Cuomo’s loss is symptomatic of the demise of the practiced politician. Each party is dealing with this fact. The Republicans are stunned into sycophantic submission. The Democrats are still in denial. The Democrats need to wake up soon to the reality of the 21st century that voters are sick and tired of the practiced politician’s hollow promises and ineffective leadership. The days of telling people what you think they want to hear to get elected then settling into a comfortable Washington lifestyle are over.
Btw, telling people what you think they want to hear to get elected then not following through with be the end of Trump. The groceries are not getting cheaper and it appears that our involvement in foreign wars is not ending. It’s only a matter of time.
I'm not panicking.....my daughter is still pissed off with my moderate stances, but Zohran did an incredible job and kept it issue focused. This is exciting too and about time. To put this into "boomer" perspective, years Ronald Reagan said this about Rev. Jesse Jackson's ability to negotiate one of our pilots being released by Syria....."you don't quarrel with success." You just don't. Period.
This says it all: While some centrists may be a bit frightened by it all, Cuomo’s campaign—or, at least, part of it—was impressed. Neal Kwatra, an adviser to Cuomo, said that Mamdani “exuded authentic empathy, toughness and true solidarity in ways most people just talk about.”
“His victory will herald a new era of generational challenges to sclerotic Democratic leadership all over the country.”
Hopefully this is true. I am a tail end boomer and I am so sick of my generation sitting there hogging all the Senate and House seats. Anyone who’s over 60 really needs to go because they simply don’t have the chops to move quickly enough to parry all the BS that’s coming out of the Trump administration. We need new tactics, younger people that have come up in the generation of smart phones and viral videos. They can be more authentic in many ways, even though some of their videos are staged, than the old people that can’t even press the video button on their phone.
I have ZERO confidence with the newly elected head of the DNC. He is definitely in the mold of the old way of doing things and does not have the capabilities IMO that we need to stand up and start pushing back. He’s been in his chair position since February and hasn’t done jack to get the ball moving and our tent has been shrinking significantly.
I totally concur. Those who are coming up from the grass roots just like this young man, are an inspiration, whatever their lean, whatever their vision as long as it is for the people. I hope more of this continues....and I think it is. Time for us to step aside.
I think it’s worth considering that Mamdani’s win also signals a revolt of Gen Z against Boomers who have taken everything from their generation. I don’t think it was just campaigning tactics.

Nobody here is talking about policies.
Trumpism has taken over the Democratic Party. What matters is passion not substance.

Democrats will win the Senate seat in North Carolina in 2026.

I can't seem to get the Bulwark's video interviews?
